Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sissi has proposed a two-day ceasefire in Gaza to pave the way for broader talks on a permanent truce, his office said on Monday.

エジプトのアブドルファッタハ・エル・シシ大統領は、恒久的停戦に向けた広範な協議への道を整えるため、ガザ地区で２日間の停戦を提案したと大統領府が月曜日に発表した。

The proposal also includes the release of some Palestinian prisoners and the delivery of humanitarian aid to the besieged coastal enclave, a statement from Mr el-Sissi's office said.

Egypt has been a key mediator in the conflict, along with Qatar and the United States.

This is the first time that Egypt’s president has publicly proposed such a plan. There has been no immediate response from Israel or Hamas.

Mr el-Sissi said the proposal aims to “move the situation forward”. He said that once the two-day ceasefire goes into effect, negotiations will continue to make it permanent.

Talks in pursuit of a longer, phased ceasefire have repeatedly stalled. Hamas wants Israeli forces out of Gaza as a precondition, but Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has said they will remain until Israel has destroyed Hamas.

The announcement came after Palestinian officials said on Sunday that Israeli strikes on northern Gaza killed at least 33 people, mostly women and children. Israel said it targeted militants.

Israeli police said the attacker was an Arab citizen of Israel. The ramming occurred outside a military base and near the headquarters of Israel’s Mossad spy agency.

Egypt’s proposal came a day after Israeli strikes on Iran in response to Iran's ballistic missile attack earlier this month.
