UK's 'DragonFire' Laser Weapon to Beef Up Ukraine's Drone Defense

Apr 13, 2024 at 08:37 pm

In response to Russia's extensive use of drones against Ukraine, the UK is set to provide Ukraine with advanced laser weapons known as "DragonFire." These weapons, originally scheduled for production in 2027, have been produced more swiftly due to the urgent need. With exceptional accuracy, the DragonFire has proven effective in targeting aerial threats, particularly drones, potentially changing the dynamics of anti-air defense.

British Laser Weapon 'DragonFire' to Bolster Ukraine's Anti-Drone Capabilities

In a significant development, the United Kingdom is poised to arm Ukraine with its cutting-edge high-power laser weapon system known as "DragonFire," intended to combat Russian drones effectively. The deployment of this advanced technology is expected to have a substantial impact on the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

British Defense Secretary Grant Shapps conveyed the government's intention to provide Ukraine with the DragonFire system, emphasizing its potential to make a "huge impact" on the war effort. The utilization of drones as formidable attack weapons by both sides has become a prevalent feature of the war.

Accelerating production, the UK Ministry of Defence anticipates an expedited delivery of the DragonFire system, initially slated for production in 2027. In January 2023, the ministry successfully conducted a test-firing of the laser weapon against aerial targets in Scotland, demonstrating its operational capabilities. This achievement prompted the advancement of the production timeline by five years to 2032.

"Ukraine gets its hands on it, and this weapon doesn't have to be 100% perfect," remarked Secretary Shapps, highlighting the urgency of the situation.

"A faster production timeline will come out in response to the rapidly changing threatening environment," the Ministry of Defence declared, acknowledging the evolving nature of contemporary warfare.

The DragonFire system boasts exceptional accuracy, capable of striking a pound coin situated at a distance of one kilometer. Video footage released by the ministry depicted a brilliant laser beam traversing the night sky over the Hebrides archipelago, precisely targeting its intended objective.

"It will be a potential game changer for anti-air defense," the Ministry of Defence asserted. "The laser beam cuts the metal, which can cause structural defects or more impact if the warhead is targeted. We remove the target at a low cost," they elaborated.

In contrast to the substantial cost of conventional air defense systems, the DragonFire reportedly incurs a mere £10 (approximately $12.15) per launch. Notably, the U.S. Navy employs the SM-2 fleet-air missile, a sophisticated system used to intercept missiles and drones, at a unit cost of $2.1 million (approximately $2.56 million).

The potential deployment of low-cost laser weapons on the battlefield could culminate in a paradigm shift in warfare. However, certain limitations exist, including the line-of-sight requirement for effective targeting.

The imminent provision of the DragonFire system to Ukraine underscores the UK's unwavering commitment to supporting the besieged nation in its defense against Russian aggression. As the conflict endures, the introduction of advanced technologies and weaponry is likely to significantly shape its trajectory.
