Prison officer Amber Clavell avoids jail despite sleeping with inmate and smuggling him drugs in her bra
Oct 10, 2024 at 06:12 pm
Amber Clavell, 25, was sentenced to community service after she got pregnant with robber Michael Kennedy's baby at Geoffrey Pearce Correction Centre
A prison officer has avoided jail despite being urged to be locked up by a judge for sleeping with an inmate and smuggling him drugs in her bra.
Amber Clavell, 25, was instead sentenced to community service, with one former inmate branding the decision “disgustingly unfair”.
The mum-of-two slept with convicted robber Michael Kennedy and got pregnant with his child at Geoffrey Pearce Correction Centre, Sydney, Australia.

Their relationship took place earlier this year when she smuggled 33g of crystalline methamphetamine, which she stuffed inside balloons - despite being a program and services officer in the jail’s intensive drug and alcohol treatment. She also hid tobacco in her bra.
After her sentencing, Francecas Fattore, who spent time in UK prisons for drug offences, spoke to the Daily Star to give her reaction.
She told us: “This is crazy. How the hell do they get away with stuff? If we got caught with a phone or drugs in prison we would get an extra charge and days added. Yet she walks away prison free.
“It is disgustingly unfair. If I got caught with a phone I would have got an extra prison sentence yet they know damn well half of the phones come in through the officers and they get away with this.”
Francesca grew up in a loving family home in Reading and her future looked bright – until drugs destroyed it.
She was a teenager when she started taking cannabis and ecstasy but this eventually progressed to heroin and crack after she became an addict.
And after the addiction took a perilous grip on her life, she became a drug dealer, because it meant she could get her own supply for free (while also earning cash).
Aged 31, she was then hauled to court for selling drugs, before she was again arrested on drug offences six years later. It landed her a prison sentence of three years and eight months.
But despite living on the same wing as one of Britain’s most evil women - an encounter with Kate Middleton changed her life.
She met the Princess of Wales who visited her when she was in HMP Send in Surrey as a reward for completing a 12-week rehab programme.
She spoke to the Mirror about how “genuine and sincere” Kate was before adding: “Having the privilege to sit with her inspired me to keep going and made me realise I was on the right path. She made me feel worthy and the experience left me on cloud nine. The video was also posted on the Kensington Royal social media accounts and I was the talk of the prison for weeks which was a really nice feeling.”
Luckily for disgraced prison officer Clavell meanwhile, she will avoid prison altogether, after pleading guilty to six charges.
Her inappropriate relationship with the armed robber was exposed when she confided in fellow correction officer Jessica Elguindy and told her the pregnancy news.
She pleaded guilty to misconduct in public office; engaging in an intimate relationship with an inmate causing risk to safety; three charges relating to smuggling tobacco and meth and accessing or modifying restricted data to look up information about Kennedy, the Mail Online reported.
Magistrate Stephen Corry sentenced her to two years and three years under and intensive correctional order (ICO). This is a “custodial sentence of up two years that the court decides can be served in the community”, Corrective Services New South Wales explained.
Clavell fought back tears as she was sentenced for her crimes at Penrith Local Court on October 9. She was also slapped with 200 hours of community service as the judge took into account her lack of previous criminal convictions.
A forensic psychologist also said Clavell was “emotionally vulnerable” during her relationship with Kennedy. It was also noted that she did not receive enough training for the role and was told to “fake it till [she] makes it” and was given a manual.
Clavell told the court in a letter she felt “disgust and disappointment” over her own actions.
According to the Sydney Morning Herald, Magistrate Corry said: “Her lack of professional qualifications and training was a major contributing factor to her offending… She was thrown in the deep end and told to kick [her] legs and swim…
“She knew it was wrong and that it was seriously wrong. There was an abuse of trust.”
Prosecutor Craig Pullen said: "A fundamental message must be sent not only to the accused, but to the community and other persons that hold similar positions."
Clavell's lawyer Brandan Green asked how jail time would "benefit public safety" and reminded the court she was the primary carer for her two children aged three and four.
