Nolan Arenado Sweepstakes Hinge on Alex Bregman Free Agency with Boston Red Sox

The Boston Red Sox have been linked to several players throughout the offseason.

Boston has indicated that it is willing to spend more money than it has in recent years, but that spending has yet to yield significant results. The Red Sox have done an excellent job of adding pitching this offseason, but they have done so creatively and without breaking the bank.

There is still time to improve the offense, and a few prominent players have been heavily linked to the Red Sox. Alex Bregman and Nolan Arenado are the two that have been mentioned the most. Both have positional question marks, excellent bats, and hefty price tags. The Red Sox would need to acquire Arenado in a trade, which would most likely cost them prospects, but he would be less expensive financially than Bregman.

He has been the subject of numerous trade rumors this offseason, but he is still a member of the St. Louis Cardinals. According to MLB.com, president of baseball operations John Mozeliak stated that Arenado's chances of being traded now are a "flip of the coin."

"Mozeliak also stated that he is 'hopeful' that a trade will materialize, but he described Arenado's chances of being dealt as 'a flip of the coin.' The Cardinals are looking to add to their bullpen and possibly acquire a right-handed bat, but Mozeliak stated that they will not make any moves until Arenado's future is determined."

According to reports, the Red Sox are the Cardinals' best hope for a trade. Everything is contingent on how free agency unfolds with Bregman. If they land Bregman, there will be no Arenado trade with Boston. Perhaps something can happen if the Red Sox miss out.

It will be fascinating to follow the sweepstakes over the next month before Spring Training.
