Celebrating 250 Years of Maritime Excellence: MDL Commemorates Milestone with Inaugural Events and Commemorative Coin Launch

Mumbai, May 14, 2024

Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL), a leading Indian shipyard, today marked its 250th anniversary, commemorating an extraordinary journey spanning over two and a half centuries. From its humble beginnings as a small dry dock in 1774 to its current status as a global shipbuilding powerhouse, MDL's milestone anniversary celebrates a legacy of resilience, growth, and enduring maritime contributions.

To commemorate this momentous occasion, MDL organized a series of events showcasing its technological advancements and commitment to excellence. The day's festivities were graced by the presence of Defence Secretary Shri Giridhar Aramane as the chief guest.

Inauguration of Acquired Land for Enhanced Shipbuilding Capacity

One of the highlights of the day was the inauguration by the Defence Secretary of a contiguous piece of land acquired from the Mumbai Port Authority (MPA). This strategic acquisition will significantly enhance MDL's shipbuilding capacity, allowing for the simultaneous construction and outfitting of new builds and repairs/refits of various types of vessels.

Launch of Prototype Indigenous Midget Submarine 'Arowana'

MDL unveiled the prototype of its indigenously designed and built midget submarine named 'Arowana.' Since 1984, MDL has been constructing submarines based on foreign designs. However, with the launch of 'Arowana,' the shipyard has embarked on a new chapter, demonstrating its capabilities in indigenous submarine development. The midget submarine serves as a proof of concept, with the team concurrently working towards the design and development of a full-scale conventional submarine by 2028.

Commissioning of Solar Electric Hybrid Boat and Fuel Cell Electric Ferry

The Defence Secretary also commissioned a Solar Electric Hybrid boat, designed and co-developed with indigenous technology partners. Boasting a top speed of 11 knots, the boat offers significant cost savings in operation and maintenance compared to traditional diesel-powered vessels. Additionally, a 24-pax Fuel Cell Electric Ferry named "SUCHI," conceptualized by MDL and co-developed with indigenous technology partners, was commissioned. This advanced technology vessel features zero emissions, low acoustic signatures, and contributes to environmental conservation by promoting cleaner waterways.

Technical Seminar on Emerging Technologies in Shipbuilding

MDL hosted a daylong technical seminar titled "Emerging Technologies and the Future of Shipbuilding." The seminar provided a platform for industry experts and academia to discuss innovative technologies shaping the future of maritime engineering.

Commemorative Coin Release Honoring MDL's Legacy

To commemorate MDL's 250th anniversary, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) issued a commemorative coin, unveiled by the Defence Secretary. The coin pays tribute to MDL's rich history and its contributions to the nation's maritime capabilities.

Congratulatory Remarks by Defence Secretary

In his address, Defence Secretary Shri Giridhar Aramane lauded MDL's role in building India's naval and commercial shipbuilding capacities. He emphasized MDL's status as the country's largest shipyard, contributing significantly to the assets of the Indian Navy. Shri Aramane commended MDL's unwavering commitment to excellence and its ability to adapt to the evolving needs of the maritime industry.

A Testament to MDL's Commitment to Maritime Endeavors

MDL's 250th anniversary celebration was not merely a commemoration of the past but also a testament to its unwavering commitment to maritime excellence. The events showcased MDL's technological advancements, innovative spirit, and unwavering dedication to delivering world-class shipbuilding solutions.

As MDL embarks on its next chapter, it stands as a symbol of India's maritime prowess and continues to play a vital role in shaping the future of shipbuilding and maritime engineering.
