Manchester transport system to be 'exceptionally busy' as thousands of football and music fans head to games and concerts

Thousands of football and music fans heading to games and concerts in Manchester next week will result in the region's transport system being "exceptionally busy".

Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) has advised people to plan their journeys carefully, travelling at quieter times wherever possible, and to allow plenty of extra time.

Trams, trains and buses - as well as some roads - are likely to be very busy at several times.

Maggie Carter, TfGM's head of network development, said a walking route from Manchester city centre to the Etihad campus was a "great option" for many.

She also encouraged football fans and concertgoers to download and use the Bee Network app and website to keep up to date with the latest travel alerts.

'Pop party'

Manchester City return to Premier League action later after the international break.

Their game against Tottenham at Etihad Stadium, which holds 53,400 fans, kicks off at 17:30 GMT - just an hour before the neighbouring Co-Op Live Arena hosts the Hits Radio Live concert.

Stars including Rita Ora, Clean Bandit, KSI and Tom Grennan will perform at what promoters have called the "pop party of the year".

Music fans have been strongly advised not to drive to the 23,500-capacity Co-Op Live Arena since there will be no on-site parking available.

The surrounding area also has a strictly enforced residents’ parking scheme.

Manchester's twin passions of football and music will again coincide on Tuesday.

City host Dutch side Feyenoord in the Champions League in a 20:00 kic-off.

At the same time, heavy metal band Sleep Token will be turning up the volume at Co-Op Live Arena.

Known for performing in masks to keep their identities hidden, Sleep Token will headline next year's Download Festival with Green Day and Korn.

Back to the football, and another big crowd is expected on Thursday when Manchester United take on defending Norwegian champions FK Bodø/Glimt in the Europa League.

Sporting their club's bright yellow colours, Bodø/Glimt supporters are due to walk to Old Trafford from the city centre before the match, which kicks off at 20:00.
