Bordeaux-Bègles Triumphs Over Bayonne in a Weather-Challenged Battle
Apr 28, 2024 at 04:50 am
Yannick Bru, head coach of Union Bordeaux-Bègles, expressed his delight with his team's victory over Aviron Bayonnais. Despite the challenging weather conditions, Bordeaux started strongly and took advantage of errors from Bayonne. However, Bayonne's strong second-half performance led to three penalties in a row, putting Bordeaux under pressure. Nonetheless, Bordeaux's players remained composed and took their chances, ultimately securing the win. Bru praised his team's forwards for their performance, acknowledging that their ability to compete in the contact zones was crucial in the victory.
In a hard-fought encounter amidst challenging weather conditions, Yannick Bru's Bordeaux-Bègles emerged victorious over Aviron Bayonnais, a result that has significant implications for their playoff aspirations.
Bru praised his team's tenacity in weathering the storm and capitalizing on Bayonne's early mistakes. "We started the match well, even against the wind and in difficult weather conditions," he remarked. "We know that the battle for possession is often decisive for Bayonne, and in the first half, we performed well in that battle, forcing errors from our opponents."
However, Bru acknowledged the challenges posed by the relentless rain, which hindered both teams' attacking capabilities. "There wasn't much we could do, given the deluge we received in the first half," he said. "We had lost the toss, so we had to attack against the wind, and I commend our leaders for their resilience."
Bordeaux-Bègles' kicking game proved to be a key factor in the first half. "Our kicking was very good in the first half, as it was well-suited to the conditions," Bru noted. "We also had a lot of success putting pressure on our opponents. We capitalized on their error, which resulted in a double-blocked kick that ended up in our goal. We had a little bit of luck on our side."
Despite Bordeaux-Bègles' strong start, Bru admitted that his team struggled to maintain their momentum in the second half. "Despite our warnings and the fact that we knew Bayonne would come out fighting very strongly in the second half, what we didn't want to happen did happen," he said. "Three penalties in a row, the crowd's intensity, and the passion put us in a corner."
Bayonne capitalized on the penalties, putting Bordeaux-Bègles under immense pressure. "We faced two tries in quick succession," Bru explained. "At that point, I knew it was going to be difficult. However, our leaders showed composure and determination to get back into the game and capitalize on our opportunities."
Bru believes his team deserved the victory, but he acknowledged that the first half played to their advantage. "I don't think we stole the win, but the scenario favored us in the first half," he said.
The victory was particularly significant for Bordeaux-Bègles' forwards, who have often been overshadowed by the team's talented backline. "Bayonne bases a lot of their play on the quality of their handling, which is exceptional," Bru said. "The challenge was to match their physicality, and I'm happy that our forwards stepped up to the task. If we hadn't matched their intensity, we would have been swept away."
Bru emphasized the importance of teamwork and the contributions of all players on the field. "A rugby team has fifteen players on the field at any given time, and four or five different roles," he explained. "It's like a small business, and some people are able to stand out because others enable them to do so. The general public sees the players who score the tries, but we know how valuable our forwards are."
The victory has major strategic implications for Bordeaux-Bègles. "We have five matches remaining, and we are approaching them as if they were finals," Bru said. "Before this match, we were in an unfavorable position for qualification. Even Castres, if they win in Oyonnax, could move ahead of us. The pressure to perform forces us to pay meticulous attention to our match preparation. Hats off to the players. In less than a week, when we had very little time to train, they increased their intensity and kept their heads up."
Bru sees the victory as a sign of progress for his team, particularly in terms of their ability to perform consistently away from home. "Romain Buros pointed out that this was our most controlled away performance," he said. "Do I see it as a sign of progress? Yes, because we have had some painful experiences away from home. We know that away games in the Top 14 are incredibly competitive."
Bru acknowledged that having a near-full-strength squad has also contributed to their improved performances. "The answer is in the question," he said. "We have experienced some difficult moments away from home. The progress is that, in terms of our mentality and intensity, we were there from the first minute, something we didn't do in Lyon, Montpellier, or Castres."
"The reality is that I'm a much better coach when I have Penaud, Bielle-Biarrey, Lucu, Jalibert, and Moefana," Bru added. "It's that simple. Now, we have the time to work together. We know that we are on a single path, just as we were when we were eliminated from the Champions Cup. We all put pressure on ourselves, on the staff, and on the players, and it has produced a good result."
