Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Georgetown, Guyana, on Wednesday, where he was greeted by President Irfaan Ali, Prime Minister of Grenada Dickon Mitchell, Prime Minister of Barbados Mia Mottley, and four ministers from Guyana at a hotel.

Earlier, in an unprecedented display of hospitality, PM Modi was met at the airport by President Irfan Ali, PM Mark Anthony Phillips, and over a dozen Cabinet ministers. He is the first Indian PM to visit the South American nation in 56 years.

In a special gesture, PM was warmly received by President @DrMohamedIrfaa1, PM Mark Anthony Phillips & Cabinet Ministers of & was accorded a ceremonial welcome, on arrival at the airport. This is the first visit by an Indian PM to Guyana in 56 years."

In a press briefing before the PM's Guyana visit, the Ministry of External Affairs stated that the Prime Minister is visiting at the invitation of Guyanese President Mohammad Irfaan Ali.

"Recently, there has been an uptick in high-level contacts between India and Guyana. President Irfaan Ali himself was a chief guest at Pravasi Bharatiya Divas in January 2023," said Jaideep Mazumdar, Secretary (East) in the Ministry of External Affairs.

Mazumdar elaborated on the PM's interactions during the Guyana visit, which will include delegation-level talks with President Irfaan Ali.

The MEA official further highlighted that Guyana is the fastest-growing economy in the world, presenting opportunities for India to partner with them in various fields. "It is the fastest-growing economy in the world, and we will have opportunities for partnering with them in diverse fields," stated Mazumdar.

I will also pay my respects to one of the oldest Indian diaspora, who migrated more than 185 years ago, and engage a fellow democracy, as I address their Parliament," the Prime Minister had earlier noted.
