The art of making small talk at work is on the decline, with younger generations favoring online communication over face-to-face conversations, according to new research.

A survey of 2,000 employed adults found that 74% struggle to make light conversation with colleagues in shared spaces like the office kitchen or lift. Nearly half admit to using platforms like WhatsApp, Teams, or email instead – even when sitting close to the person they're contacting.

Small talk might feel awkward, but the research highlights its benefits. Over half (51%) believe these casual chats improve communication, with 49% saying they lead to a happier workforce and 48% linking them to better company morale.

Anna Beheshti from Tilda, which commissioned the study to promote its quick lunch options, says: “With hybrid working now the norm, we don't get the same daily practice in social interactions as we used to when most of us were in the office full time.
