Arne Engels: Rangers yet to contact Celtic midfielder after he was struck by coin at Ibrox
2025/01/08 15:17
Celtic midfielder Arne Engels has revealed that he has yet to receive a personal apology from Rangers following the incident last week where he was struck by a coin during the Glasgow Derby at Ibrox.
Despite widespread condemnation of the event, and calls for stricter fan behaviour measures at the stadium, Rangers have only issued a statement in the aftermath.
Engels confirmed he had spoken with police investigating the matter but there had been no direct outreach from the Ibrox club itself.
Speaking ahead of Celtic’s match against Dundee United, Engels said: [Glasgow Times]
“I only spoke to the police afterwards. They were investigating everything and said they would do everything to search for who it was and to then see what the next consequences are.
“From the Rangers side? I don’t really know if I heard something, But it was okay. You need to move on. We have the next game tomorrow, so we need to focus on that and not really on the things besides football.”
The incident is the latest in a worrying trend at Ibrox, where multiple high-profile safety issues have marred matches in recent years.
During a previous derby, broken glass was discovered in the Celtic goalkeeper’s penalty area, prompting outrage and an investigation, while a Celtic staff member required stitches after being struck by an object thrown from the main stand.
Visiting supporters have frequently been targeted when attending games in Govan, leading to the installation on the nets.
These incidents have brought scrutiny to Rangers’ handling of fan behaviour at their stadium.
While Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers and club officials have been vocal in their condemnation of the attack on Engels, the SPFL has also issued a statement urging anyone with information to contact Police Scotland, and the coin involved in the incident has been handed over as evidence.
However, a personal apology to Engels from Rangers would go a long way in demonstrating accountability and a commitment to addressing such conduct.
