May 11, 2024 at 01:51 am
Michelle Murphy was sentenced to nine years in prison for plotting to murder her boyfriend's lover using Bitcoin on the dark web. The investigation began in August 2023 when Homeland Security received a tip about an attempt to hire a hitman, leading to Murphy's arrest in September 2023. Prosecutors and defense attorneys believe the "hitman" did not intend to carry out the murder.
Convicted Murder-for-Hire Conspirator Faces Nine Years in Federal Prison
In a chilling case that highlights the sinister connections between the digital realm and real-world violence, a Texas woman has been sentenced to nine years in federal prison for soliciting a hitman on the dark web to eliminate her boyfriend's lover.
Michelle Murphy, 58, was found guilty in December of one count of murder-for-hire, a heinous crime that strikes at the heart of human safety and trust. According to the U.S. Attorney's Office, Murphy sought to pay a hitman $10,510 in Bitcoin, a decentralized cryptocurrency, for the execution of her boyfriend's romantic rival.
The complex trail of events leading to Murphy's apprehension began in the summer of 2023, when she converted cash into cryptocurrency at an ATM and transferred it to a Bitcoin wallet she believed belonged to a contract killer. However, unknown to Murphy, her sinister actions were being scrutinized by the watchful eyes of Homeland Security Investigations (HSI).
HSI received a tip from an undisclosed source indicating that an individual known only as "LISTMUDI" was actively seeking to commission a murder on the dark web. Investigators meticulously pieced together the puzzle, tracing the encrypted communications to Murphy.
The intended victim, identified in court documents as "Intended Victim-1," provided crucial information during an interview with HSI agents. She revealed her romantic involvement with a man known as "O.G." and his residence in Bedford, Texas, with another woman named "Michelle."
The investigation intensified as agents discovered Murphy's Facebook page, which not only confirmed her relationship with O.G. but also featured photographs of a distinctive Mudi breed dog. The moniker "LISTMUDI" became a key thread connecting Murphy to the plot.
On September 21, 2023, HSI agents intercepted Murphy and O.G. at the Dallas Fort Worth International Airport. Confronted with the evidence gathered against her, Murphy confessed to transferring Bitcoin to pay for a murder-for-hire.
During Thursday's sentencing hearing, prosecutors and defense attorneys acknowledged that the "hitman" who received funds from Murphy likely never intended to carry out the murder. Nonetheless, the court meticulously considered the grave nature of Murphy's actions and the potential consequences for her intended victim.
Murphy's sentence includes nine years of federal imprisonment, followed by two years of supervised release. The court has also recommended her participation in mental health treatment programs while incarcerated.
Authorities commend the efforts of HSI agents and the U.S. Attorney's Office in bringing this dangerous individual to justice. This case serves as a stark reminder of the perilous consequences that can arise from criminal activity in the digital sphere.
As the world becomes increasingly interconnected, law enforcement agencies must remain vigilant in combating illicit activities that threaten public safety and undermine the rule of law. The successful prosecution of Michelle Murphy sends a clear message that murder-for-hire and other heinous crimes will not be tolerated, whether perpetrated online or offline.
