Woman Rescued from Captivity and Abuse After Penning Desperate Note
Montpellier, France - April 26, 2024 - A 32-year-old woman who had been held captive and subjected to violence by her partner managed to alert passersby by throwing a small piece of paper out of a window on Tuesday in Montpellier. The woman who alerted the authorities has recounted the incident.
Doaa, the witness who discovered the note, does not consider herself a hero but expressed pride in having played a role in saving the victim. Doaa and her partner, Kevin, were returning home along an unfamiliar street when they noticed a piece of paper lying on the ground. While most pedestrians might have ignored it, the couple realized something was written on it. The note read, "Help me. Please call the police. I'm being held captive."
"We thought it was improbable that we would come across such a note, which seemed to have been stepped on," Doaa told RMC. The author of the note had also included her first name and address. "At first, when you find something like that, you wonder if it's a bad joke, but it wasn't a joke at all," testified the young woman.
The couple approached municipal police officers patrolling nearby, who took the call for help seriously. The officers went to the address provided on the note, but there was no response. National police were then dispatched to the scene.
"They found a woman who had been held captive and beaten by her partner," Doaa said. The victim, who had severe facial injuries, was transported to the hospital. Her 30-year-old partner was taken into custody.
The witness credited with triggering the rescue said she is "happy and proud to have saved this person" but does not view herself as a heroine. "If we all pay attention to the little details we sometimes find on the ground, it could save lives," concluded Doaa, who is unaware of how long the victim had been held captive.
The incident serves as a stark reminder of the prevalence of domestic violence and the importance of neighbors and community members looking out for vulnerable individuals. It underscores the crucial role that simple acts of observation and reporting can play in breaking the cycle of abuse and protecting those in need.
