The harvest, heralding the arrival of spring, commenced on Wednesday, April 24th, marking an advance of six days compared to last year's kickoff on May 4th. Within hours, Arnaudiès had meticulously gathered 10.5 kilograms of prized Burlat cherries for the La Melba cooperative, their calibers ranging from 22 to 24.
"Without adequate water, the cherries struggle to reach their full size," explains Arnaudiès, acknowledging the challenges posed by the region's prevailing dry conditions. Nonetheless, the promise of abundance abounds, with other cherry varieties such as Sumit, Bellise, and Starking boasting heavily laden branches that sway gently in the breeze.
Arnaudiès relies on a traditional "davantal" (apron), expertly crafted by Michèle Devezeaud, to safeguard his precious harvest. The vibrant fabric, meticulously selected by Arnaudiès himself, is cinched at the waist by a "veta" (lace) that crisscrosses behind and ties securely in front, ensuring the skirt of the apron remains firmly in place. This ingenious design prevents the cherries from tumbling unceremoniously to the ground when the "falda" (skirt) is fully loaded.
Anticipating a more bountiful harvest next Monday, Arnaudiès eagerly awaits the ripening of the remaining Burlat cherries.
