Sleep Token continued their ascent to the throne yesterday (December 03) as the masked alternative metal band played a sold out headline set at the 20,000 capacity O2 Arena in London, England.
While the UK publications are hailing last night’s performance as the band’s latest coronation in becoming certified metal/rock royalty, vocalist Vessel didn’t seem entirely too pressured.
In fact, during one of the band’s instrumental interludes, he appeared to be taking some time helping out a member of the band’s stage crew on either a Nintendo Switch or a Steam Deck from the side of the stage.
Usually, instrumental interludes provide a window for a vocalist to catch their breath, grab some refreshments, or even if necessary, take a hit of oxygen. In the case of Tool, etc. vocalist Maynard James Keenan, those windows serve as an opportune time for pranks.
Whether a planned skit or not, Vessel’s apparent mid-set game assist showcased an amusing moment of levity for a band who find themselves under increasing pressure to, ahem, level up and deliver engaging experiences worthy of their hype and viral fame.
Perhaps the band’s biggest test is yet to come however, as next year will find them headlining the flagship UK edition of the annual ‘Download Festival’. That decision has proven divisive among the metal and rock community, with some voicing their concerns that the band are merely a flash in the pan or have yet to earn the honour. However, Sleep Token have found an ally in ‘Download Festival’ founder Andy Copping, who came to the band’s defence several weeks ago.
