Understanding Mahavir Jayanti

Mahavir Jayanti holds immense significance as it marks the birth anniversary of Mahavir, the founder of Jainism. Jain communities throughout the world observe this festival with deep reverence, fostering peace and harmony while disseminating Mahavira's teachings. Being the 24th Tirthankara of Jainism, Mahavira's life and philosophy continue to guide followers.

Celebrated on the 13th day of the Chaitra month in the Jain calendar, Mahavir Jayanti falls on April 21st this year. The festival is characterized by processions featuring Mahavira's idol adorned upon a chariot, accompanied by devout devotees chanting sacred hymns. Jain adherents participate in acts of charity, pray fervently, observe fasts, and visit Jain temples, engaging in congregational prayers and meditation. The consumption of satvik food, a wholesome vegetarian meal prepared without onion or garlic, is a customary part of the festivities.
