Apr 24, 2024 at 12:05 pm

The National Park System, an economic powerhouse generating over $50 billion annually, is celebrating National Park Week. Carver National Monument, one of over 400 National Park System facilities, alone welcomed nearly 30,000 visitors last year, contributing over $700,000 to the Joplin area. This weekend's Art in the Park event is expected to attract even more visitors.

National Parks: Economic Powerhouse Driving Local Economies

National Park System Generates Substantial Revenue, Contributes to Local Economies

DIAMOND, Mo. - The National Park System, renowned as "our nation's greatest idea," is not only a repository of natural wonders but also a significant economic engine. Last year, the system generated over $50 billion in revenue, demonstrating its impact beyond recreational enjoyment.

Carver National Monument in Diamond, Missouri, is one of the over 400 National Park System facilities. According to park guide Valerie Baldwin, visitors flock from far and wide to experience its historical significance.

"On a typical weekend, we've had people from Minnesota, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, New Hampshire, Texas, Florida, and Georgia," said Baldwin.

This weekend, Carver National Monument will welcome an influx of visitors for its annual Art in the Park event, scheduled during National Park Week. The event showcases the artistic side of George Washington Carver, who was initially admitted to college as an art student.

Last year, Carver National Monument attracted nearly 30,000 visitors, generating over $700,000 in revenue for the Joplin area.

"We have visitors who come for a few hours and move on, while others spend the entire day," said Baldwin. "Some even return the next day to delve deeper into the monument's history."

Another National Park System facility in the region, Fort Scott Historic Site in Kansas, welcomed almost 27,000 visitors last year, contributing $575,000 to the southeast Kansas economy.

The National Park System's economic impact extends beyond visitor spending. It also supports local businesses through employment opportunities, concessions, and tourism-related industries. The presence of national parks often attracts businesses and entrepreneurs looking to capitalize on the increased foot traffic and interest in the area.

Furthermore, the National Park System plays a vital role in preserving cultural and natural heritage. These parks protect unique ecosystems, historic structures, and archaeological sites for future generations to appreciate and learn from.

As National Park Week approaches, individuals are encouraged to visit these iconic destinations and witness their natural beauty, explore their historical significance, and support the economic vitality they generate for local communities.
