With the 2025 municipal general elections now practically a year away, Municipal Affairs Minister Andrée Laforest is launching an advertising campaign to encourage citizens across Quebec to run for mayor or councilor in their municipalities.
As the 2025 municipal general elections approach, Municipal Affairs Minister Andrée Laforest has announced an advertising campaign to encourage citizens across Quebec to run for mayor or councilor in their municipalities.
The campaign, titled "Tu aimes ton coin, va plus loin!" (You Love Your Area, Go Further!), will take place in four phases between November 2024 and September 2025. It aims to fill elected positions by recruiting new candidates in nearly 1,100 municipalities throughout the province.
The campaign highlights the importance of people's connection to their local area and aims to translate it into concrete involvement within their communities.
The initiative also seeks to foster greater interest in elected roles among women and young people. For example, young people make up around 25% of the population but only represented 9.5% of candidates in the previous municipal general elections in 2021.
According to the Tu aimes ton coin, va plus loin platform, approximately 8,000 municipal positions, including 19 for regional council wardens, will be available in the 2025 election.
The Secretariat for the Status of Women is financially supporting this campaign to continue efforts to increase women's representation in politics. In the 2021 municipal elections, women accounted for 35.5% of all candidates.
"Municipal elections will be held on November 2, 2025, but future candidates should start considering it today!" stated Minister Laforest. "I want to tell anyone interested in improving their community that getting involved in municipal politics is a way to make a tangible difference and contribute positively to their area's development. The role of municipal elected officials is crucial for our democracy!"
The official nomination period will run from September 19 to October 3, 2025, with the municipal general elections taking place on November 2, 2025.
