United States Monitors Guinea's Transition, Engages with Prime Minister

CONAKRY, Guinea - The United States government is closely monitoring the ongoing political transition in Guinea, with senior officials engaging with the country's leadership.

In a significant development on Monday, the Prime Minister of Guinea, Bah Oury, held a meeting with Molly Phee, the US Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs. The meeting took place in the presence of Guinea's Foreign Minister, Dr. Morissanda Kouyaté.

According to sources close to the matter, the discussions focused on several key issues, including the restoration of constitutional order in Guinea, as well as the current security and economic challenges facing the region.

While the Guinean government has yet to issue an official statement on the meeting, the US State Department's Bureau of African Affairs has shed some light on its content. According to the bureau, the Guinean officials briefed Phee on their efforts to advance the democratic transition and strengthen state institutions.

The meeting comes at a critical juncture in Guinea's transition. The announcement of a possible extension of the electoral timeline, which could delay the return of civilian rule until early 2025, has been met with mixed reactions.

A new coalition of opposition groups has threatened to resume street protests if the original electoral timeline agreed upon between the transitional authorities and the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) is not respected. The initial agreement stipulated a two-year transition period.

The United States has expressed its commitment to strengthening its "bilateral partnership" with Guinea. However, it remains to be seen how the government will navigate the current tensions surrounding the political transition.

As the situation in Guinea continues to evolve, the United States is expected to remain actively engaged, monitoring the progress of the transition and providing support where possible.
