May 04, 2024 at 03:51 am

On Sunday 28th April, Mazeres en Ariège's journey came to an end in the 1/32nd final for Jerome Baradat and Bertrand Rigaud's men (reserve, XV). Defeated 21 to 11 against Tournefeuille, they can only regret and blame themselves for this encounter.

Mazères Dealt Heartbreaking Defeat in Cup Final Clash with Tournefeuille

Heartbreak for Mazères as Tournefeuille Triumph in Cup Clash

Mazères, Ariège - Sunday, April 28, 2023 - The rugby dreams of Jérôme Baradat and Bertrand Rigaud's Mazères XV came crashing down in Mazères as they bowed out of the cup in a disappointing 21-11 defeat to Tournefeuille.

Despite a dominant start from the Mazères pack, led by the formidable Arnaud Bergé, the team failed to capitalize on their advantage, leaving their opponents a glimmer of hope. Tournefeuille's resolve was further strengthened by two red cards before the break, reducing them to 13 men.

However, Mazères persisted in their relentless assault on the Tournefeuille forwards, despite the obvious opportunities presented by the depleted opposition. This obstinate approach ultimately proved their undoing.

Despite a valiant effort throughout the season, culminating in their first qualification in a decade, the Mazères team must now reflect on their missed opportunities and learn from their mistakes. Their motto "Unis pour un territoire" (United for a Common Cause) was exemplified by the unwavering support of their loyal fans and the presence of their first-team colleagues.

However, it was the absence of support from the Tournefeuille community that raised eyebrows. The resounding silence that greeted their victory served as a stark contrast to the jubilant scenes witnessed in the Mazères camp.

In a touching moment, local hero Bertrand Arthozoul played his final match for Mazères, etching his name forever into the club's history books. The son of a legendary club figure, Arthozoul is destined to follow in his father's footsteps as a dedicated and tireless volunteer, ensuring the club's future prosperity for years to come.
