output: The 2024 NFL season kicked off on Thursday night with a back-and-forth battle between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Baltimore Ravens at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium.
The Chiefs ultimately came out on top with a 27-20 victory, thanks in part to a strong performance from quarterback Patrick Mahomes and a late touchdown reception by rookie wide receiver Xavier Worthy.
The game was close throughout, with the Ravens taking an early lead before the Chiefs rallied back to take a 14-10 lead into halftime.
Baltimore tied the game up early in the third quarter, but Kansas City quickly regained the lead and never looked back.
The Chiefs' defense also played a key role in the victory, forcing two turnovers and sacking Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson four times.
Here's a closer look at the game's biggest storylines and highlights:
Mahomes starts season strong
After a record-breaking 2023 season, Mahomes picked up right where he left off on Thursday night.
The Chiefs' star quarterback completed 28 of 44 passes for 308 yards, two touchdowns and one interception. He also added 23 rushing yards on four attempts.
Mahomes connected with nine different receivers throughout the game, including Worthy, who hauled in his first NFL touchdown reception on a 35-yard jet sweep in the fourth quarter.
The touchdown reception put the Chiefs up by 10 points with less than 15 minutes remaining in the game.
Baltimore responded with a touchdown of their own to cut the lead to three points, but the Chiefs' defense held on to secure the victory.
Ravens offense struggles
The Ravens' offense entered the season with high expectations after adding several key pieces in the offseason, including running back Derrick Henry and wide receiver Zay Flowers.
However, Baltimore's offense struggled to find a rhythm on Thursday night.
The Ravens finished the game with just 288 total yards of offense and were 0-for-10 on third down conversions.
Jackson completed 21 of 40 passes for 240 yards, one touchdown and one interception. He also added a team-high 68 rushing yards on 10 attempts.
Henry was limited to just 18 carries for 67 yards and one touchdown in his Ravens debut.
Flowers finished the game with four receptions for 59 yards on seven targets.
Chiefs defense shines
The Chiefs' defense put together a strong performance on Thursday night, especially in the second half.
Kansas City forced two turnovers in the game, including an interception by cornerback Jaylen Watson in the third quarter that set up the Chiefs' first touchdown drive of the second half.
The Chiefs also sacked Jackson four times, including twice by defensive end Frank Clark.
Baltimore was 0-for-10 on third down conversions and finished the game with just 288 total yards of offense.
