Another lake effect snowstorm pounds Upstate New York, with more than 2 feet falling since Wednesday

Syracuse, N.Y. -- Another round of lake effect snow is slamming parts of Upstate New York this week, with some areas already seeing more than 2 feet.

The highest total so far is 30 inches in the Buffalo suburb of Orchard Park, according to the National Weather Service. That’s where the Buffalo Bills stadium is located, but the Bills are playing in Detroit this weekend.

At least five spots in Western New York have already seen 2 feet of snow. The Tug Hill Plateau is also getting hit hard, but the weather service hasn’t posted totals yet for that area. (See complete chart below.)

A state of emergency has been declared for counties in Western New York and the Tug Hill plateau.

In the North Country, Jefferson County early this afternoon issued an order for no unnecessary travel due to the snow and wind.

This week’s snow is on top of the 4 feet or more that fell in a storm last week.

More snow is expected, with two more feet possible on Tug Hill and another foot or so in the Buffalo area, the weather service said.

This National Weather Service graphic shows forecast snowfall amounts along the Great Lakes in Upstate New York from Thursday, Dec. 12, through Friday, Dec. 13, 2024. (Courtesy of the National Weather Service)

The chart below the snow map shows snowfall totals compiled this morning by the Buffalo weather service office, which forecasts for areas along lakes Erie and Ontario. This list is not final or official.
