India Launches Sansad Bhashini Initiative to Integrate Artificial Intelligence (AI) into Parliamentary Processes

India is integrating artificial intelligence (AI) into its parliamentary processes with the launch of the Sansad Bhashini initiative. This project aims to enhance accessibility, automate documentation, and ensure linguistic inclusivity in legislative discussions, as announced by the Lok Sabha Secretariat.

The Lok Sabha Secretariat and the IndiaAI Mission have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to develop AI models that will translate parliamentary debates into multiple languages. The initiative will also create a vast repository of linguistic datasets to support this effort.

Announcing this initiative, India’s Information Technology Minister, Ashwini Vaishnaw, took to X, formerly known as Twitter, to highlight the importance of the project in facilitating comprehensive engagement with parliamentary proceedings.

“The Lok Sabha Secretariat and India AI Mission today signed an MoU for creating a repository of linguistic data to help build AI models for translating parliamentary debates into multiple languages. This initiative will enhance accessibility and empower researchers, MPs, and academia,” the statement reads.

The initiative will see the development of an AI-based system that will translate the content of debate records, committee meeting summaries, agenda files into multiple local languages to expand accessibility.

Real-time speech-to-text technology will be used to generate precise documentations of parliamentary sessions through automated transcriptions.

Speech-to-speech conversion technology will be used to enable live language translation through which members of parliament and officers can understand debates in their native language.

Additionally, automated summarization tools will condense lengthy discussions, making information more digestible and improving decision-making processes.

According to a statement from the Lok Sabha Secretariat, these innovations are expected to “open up legislative discussions to a wider audience by making them available in multiple languages in real-time.”

Parliamentary staff together with MPs can access help through an AI-based chatbot which is a main function of this system.

Instant access to procedural rules and past legislative decisions along with relevant documents will be provided through this chatbot system.

The chatbot uses feedback from user encounters to enhance its precision with each customer interaction. The tool should diminish legislators’ research time spent finding information so they can dedicate more effort toward discussions and policy creation.

A spokesperson from the Lok Sabha Secretariat commented on this development, saying, “Having an AI system that can quickly retrieve parliamentary rules and documents will be a game changer for efficiency in the House.”

The Ministry of Electronics & IT has described India as a global leader in AI and technology. A recent assessment placed India among the top four countries in AI development, alongside the United States, China, and the United Kingdom.

The IndiaAI Mission, which was approved in March 2024, aims to build a strong AI ecosystem that aligns with national development goals. The initiative has gathered 67 foundation model development proposals since February 2025.

Of the received proposals the IndiaAI Mission has 22 large language models along with multimodal AI solutions and 45 domain-specific applications targeting healthcare education and financial services.
