The India vs Bangladesh Test series has got off to a spicy start, with both sides bringing out their best on the first day. As the action now shifts to the second day of the match, let us try to analyse day one’s play and find out what we can expect from Day two of the IND vs BAN, 1st Test.
Hasan Mahmud Heroics
Bangladesh skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto managed to win the coin flip and put the Indian team to bat on track, which seemed to favour the pacers in the first session of the game. The Bangladeshi bowlers, led by Hasan Mahmud, made great use of the conditions and had the home team struggling at 34/3 by the 10th over of the innings.
After this, India started to come back into the game with small partnerships, but the persistence of the Bangladeshi bowlers ultimately won. India lost three more wickets in the second session, and at 144/6, it looked like the hosts would fail to put on a fighting total in their first innings.
However, Ravindra Jadeja and Ravichandran Ashwin scripted a dramatic turnaround from here. The duo stitched an unbeaten partnership of 195 runs and guided India well past the 300 mark by the end of the day. Jadeja and Ashwin will resume day 2 for India at individual scores of 86* off 117 and 102* off 112, respectively. India will start the proceedings at 339/6 at the end of 80 overs.
Stats of Day 2
If we look at Day 2 of the last four Chennai Tests, 252 runs have been scored on average, while eight wickets have fallen.
Well, day two of a match is generally considered the best batting day on a test. However, the numbers of Chennai in the last four matches reveal that it has been one of the slowest days of a game as far as run-scoring is concerned; it seems to be the day where, after an eventful day one, both teams try to make a comeback and try and deploy new strategies.
So, as far as history is concerned, it will be a much less eventful day than yesterday.
What To Expect From Bangladesh?
Bangladesh have already bowled eight overs with the ball currently in use. So, the first thing to expect from Najmul Hossain Shanto is to take the new ball this morning and bring in his pacers. The visitors will attempt to get India’s last four wickets as quickly as possible. They cannot afford India to get past the 400 mark.
What To Expect From India?
India have Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammad Siraj and Akash Deep left to bat. So, Jadeja and Ashwin will be careful at the start of the day and stretch the first innings for India as long as possible. Rohit Sharma and his men will aim to get past the 400 mark and have a psychological advantage over the visitors.
Predicted Progress On Day 2
The first hour of day two in the IND vs BAN 1st Test will be crucial in deciding the direction of the game. If Bangladesh manages to get India’s four wickets quickly and restrict them below 400, then the visitors will have a real chance in the game.
On the other hand, if India go past the 400 mark, then Bangladesh will be under pressure when they come out to bat for the first time in the match.
Either way, Bangladesh will be batting on day two, and how the visitors handle Jasprit Bumrah and co on a spicy wicket will be interesting to see. Besides, Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja will also start having a more significant effect on this track from the end of day two. The challenge for the Bangladeshi batters will be high on this pitch at Chennai, and it will be interesting to see how this new-gen Bangladesh team handle this challenge.
