Gujarat Titans Captain Shubman Gill Fined Heavily for Slow Over Rate in Loss to Chennai Super Kings

Mar 27, 2024 at 06:12 pm

Gujarat Titans captain Shubman Gill was fined $14,400 EST (INR 12 lakh) for maintaining a slow over-rate during the match against Chennai Super Kings on Tuesday, March 26. It was his team's first offense of the season under the IPL Code of Conduct relating to a minimum over-rate offense.

Gujarat Titans Captain Shubman Gill Fined Heavily for Slow Over Rate in Loss to Chennai Super Kings

Shubman Gill's Slow Over Rate Draws Hefty Fine in Gujarat Titans' Loss to Chennai Super Kings

In a setback for the Gujarat Titans, captain Shubman Gill has been slapped with a hefty fine of $14,400 EST (INR 12 lakh) by the Indian Premier League (IPL) for maintaining a slow over rate during their match against the Chennai Super Kings.

The incident occurred during Tuesday's game at the Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai, where Gill's team was found guilty of falling behind the required over rate, according to a Times of India report.

In a statement, the IPL confirmed, "As it was his team's first offense of the season under the IPL's Code of Conduct relating to a minimum over rate offense, Gill was fined INR 12 lakhs."

Gill's transgression comes as a blow to the Gujarat Titans, who suffered a disappointing loss against the Chennai Super Kings in their second match of the league.

Opting to bowl first after winning the toss, Gill watched helplessly as Ruturaj Gaikwad's CSK amassed a formidable total of 207 runs. In response, Gill's team could only muster 143 runs before being dismissed, handing CSK a comfortable 63-run victory.

Adding to Gujarat Titans' misery, CSK's Shivam Dube was named player of the match for his blistering knock of 51 runs off just 23 balls.

The Gujarat Titans had started the 17th edition of the tournament on a positive note, securing a victory over the Mumbai Indians on Sunday, March 24. However, their recent defeat and Gill's fine have cast a shadow over their promising start.

The incident highlights the importance of maintaining the required over rate in the IPL, which aims to ensure the smooth flow of the game and prevent teams from intentionally slowing down the pace to gain an advantage.
