As they begin a new academic year, today’s Jewish college students are facing a historic convergence of crises, including rising antisemitism, the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the war in Ukraine, the climate crisis, the overturning of Roe v. Wade, and the recent shooting in Highland Park, Ill. They urgently need access to support and relief.
This article explores how mental health is addressed and prioritized for today’s youth and calls for a rethink of how schools address the issue of mental health on their campuses.
At a time of rising mental health challenges on campus, the current environment is pushing us to find innovative approaches that reach more young people.
According to the American College Health Association’s 2022 National College Health Assessment, 74.7% of students reported feeling overwhelmed by everything they had to do in the past 12 months, and 62.2% reported feeling hopeless. These numbers have increased significantly since 2021.
In addition to the challenges that all students are facing, Jewish students are also dealing with a rise in antisemitism on campus. According to a 2021 survey by the Anti-Defamation League, 39% of Jewish college students reported experiencing antisemitism in the past year. This number is up from 27% in 2019.
Antisemitism can take many forms, including verbal harassment, physical assault, vandalism, and social exclusion. It can have a devastating impact on students’ mental health, leading to feelings of anxiety, depression, and isolation.
Colleges and universities have a responsibility to create a safe and welcoming environment for all students, including Jewish students. This means taking steps to address mental health challenges and to combat antisemitism on campus.
Here are some specific actions that schools can take:
Increase funding for mental health services: Many colleges and universities are understaffed and underfunded when it comes to mental health services. This can make it difficult for students to get the help they need in a timely manner. Schools need to increase their investment in mental health services to ensure that all students have access to the care they need.
Expand the range of mental health services: Traditional mental health services, such as individual therapy and group counseling, can be helpful for some students, but they may not be the best fit for everyone. Schools need to expand the range of mental health services available to include self-help groups, peer support networks, and online therapy.
Integrate mental health into the curriculum: Mental health is an important topic that should be integrated into the curriculum across all disciplines. This will help to educate students about mental health, reduce stigma, and encourage them to seek help if they need it.
Create a task force on antisemitism: Schools should create a task force on antisemitism to develop and implement strategies to combat antisemitism on campus. The task force should be composed of students, faculty, staff, and administrators, and it should work closely with the local Jewish community.
The mental health of today’s youth is a critical issue that demands our attention and action. We must work together to create a more supportive and inclusive environment for all students, and we must ensure that they have the resources they need to succeed.
