ECI Unveils Comprehensive Measures to Combat Soaring Temperatures During April 26 Elections

Nagpur, March 18, 2023: In anticipation of the sweltering heat expected on April 26 polling day, the Election Commission of India (ECI) has announced a series of preventive measures to ensure voter comfort and mitigate any potential health concerns.

Token System and Queue Management

To minimize waiting times in long queues under the scorching sun, voters will be provided tokens upon arriving at polling stations. Separate tokens will be issued for women and men. A maximum of five voters will be permitted in the queue at any given time.

Designated Cooling and Waiting Areas

In addition to the token system, designated waiting areas equipped with fans/coolers, chairs, and drinking water will be established adjacent to polling stations. These areas will provide respite for voters while they await their turn.

Medical Assistance and Special Arrangements

To address any health issues arising from the heat, a medical team will be present at each polling station with a medical kit containing essential medicines and Oral Rehydration Solution (ORS). Furthermore, for buildings housing multiple polling stations, pavilions will be erected outside to provide shade and shelter.

Accessibility for Disabled Voters

Special arrangements have been made for disabled voters. They can pre-register on the Saksham app to facilitate transportation to and from polling booths and access wheelchairs. Dummy ballot papers in Braille will be available for visually impaired voters, and a number in Braille will be placed beside the blue button on Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) to assist them in casting their votes.

District-Specific Implementation

Election officials in Buldhana, Wardha, and other districts have confirmed the implementation of these measures to combat the hot weather conditions. The Wardha district administration is expected to announce the measures on Monday.

The Buldhana district information office emphasized the various steps being taken to ensure that the high temperatures do not hinder the electoral process. The measures are aimed at providing a comfortable and accessible voting experience for all citizens.
