Craig Wright's Satoshi Nakamoto Claims Freeze His Assets in Legal Maze
Mar 31, 2024 at 01:43 am
An Australian computer scientist, Craig Wright, has faced legal consequences following claims of being the elusive Satoshi Nakamoto, Bitcoin's creator. Amidst a UK court ruling discrediting his assertion, his assets have been frozen due to concerns over Wright's attempts to evade trial costs. COPA, a cryptocurrency advocacy organization, obtained a worldwide freezing order to address its expenses in a lawsuit against Wright, challenging his copyright claims over the Bitcoin white paper.
Craig Wright's Legal Tangled Web: Assets Frozen Amidst Satoshi Nakamoto Claims
Craig Wright, an Australian computer scientist, finds himself ensnared in a legal labyrinth, with a United Kingdom court decreeing a freeze of £6 million of his assets. This remarkable development stems from allegations that Wright is Satoshi Nakamoto, the elusive creator of Bitcoin, allegations that have been repeatedly disputed and debunked.
The asset freeze was prompted by Wright's maneuvers to transfer some of his holdings outside the UK in the wake of a court ruling that discredited his claims to be Nakamoto. According to court documents, he shifted shares of his London firm, RCJBR Holding, to a Singaporean entity on March 18, a move that raised concerns among legal authorities.
In a document filed with the court, Judge James Mellor expressed apprehensions about Wright's actions, suggesting that he might be attempting to evade the financial consequences of his trial loss. The Crypto Open Patent Alliance (COPA), seeking to recover its substantial court expenses amounting to $8,471,225, sought and obtained a 'worldwide freezing order' endorsed by the judge.
COPA, established in 2020, is a coalition of organizations dedicated to promoting cryptocurrency technologies and eliminating patents as a barrier to innovation. Its membership boasts prominent entities like Coinbase and MicroStrategy, among others.
Wright had leveraged his dubious claim to be Nakamoto to assert copyright claims regarding the Bitcoin network, including demanding the removal of the Bitcoin white paper from certain websites. COPA, however, contested Wright's assertions and filed a lawsuit against him in April 2021. The lawsuit challenged Wright's claims of being Nakamoto and, consequently, his assertion of copyright ownership over Bitcoin. Testimonies from early Bitcoin developers overwhelmingly pointed to the fact that Wright is not Satoshi Nakamoto, a conclusion reached by the presiding judge.
In a separate legal battle in 2023, Wright sued 13 Bitcoin Core developers and several companies for copyright violations related to the Bitcoin white paper and its associated rights. However, the court ruled that the file format for Bitcoin cannot be protected by copyright.
Delivering his ruling at the high court of England and Wales, Judge Mellor stated, "I do not see any prospect of the law as currently stated and understood in the case law allowing copyright protection of subject-matter which is not expressed or fixed anywhere.” He added, “It remains the case that no relevant ‘work’ has been identified containing content which defines the structure of the Bitcoin File Format,” although Wright and the two investment companies who made the claim had ample opportunity to do so.
Responding to the lawsuit, the Bitcoin Legal Defense Fund (BLDF) highlighted the alarming trend of abusive lawsuits targeting prominent Bitcoin contributors, which impede the development of the cryptocurrency due to the associated time, stress, expenses, and legal risks. Speaking at Bitcoin 2023 Miami, the Chief Legal Officer of BLDF asserted that Craig Wright poses the most significant threat to the existence and development of Bitcoin.
The Bitcoin Legal Defense Fund (BLDF) provides legal assistance to individuals and businesses involved in Bitcoin and cryptocurrencies. Founded in 2014 by Roger Ver, the BLDF aids clients facing legal challenges related to Bitcoin use, regulatory issues, copyright violations, and more.
Supported by donors who believe in safeguarding Bitcoin rights, contributions to the BLDF are tax-deductible. The organization offers expert legal representation through a dedicated team of specialized lawyers and access to pro bono attorneys.
While Wright had filed a United States copyright registration for the Bitcoin white paper and its code in 2019, it is now subject to an MIT open-source license, permitting free usage and modification. An injunction from the court would halt any further attempts by Wright to claim copyright over the Bitcoin white paper.
Craig Wright's legal woes exemplify the perils of making unsubstantiated claims and the lengths to which some individuals will go to maintain a facade of credibility. The asset freeze imposed by the UK court serves as a stark reminder that the law will not tolerate baseless assertions and attempts to profit from deception. As the legal battle continues, the cryptocurrency community and the world at large await the ultimate resolution of this tangled web of deceit, one that has cast a shadow over the legacy of Bitcoin itself.
