Celtic's Dedryck Boyata hit by coin during Rangers defeat
Jan 08, 2025 at 03:00 am
The Belgium international was hit just above the eye with a flying coin as he went to take a corner during Celtic's 3-0 defeat by Rangers on January 2.
Celtic defender Boli Bolingoli has spoken out about being hit by a flying coin during the Old Firm derby earlier this month.
The Belgium international was struck just above the eye as he went to take a corner during Celtic's 3-0 defeat by Rangers on January 2.
Bolingoli, 21, was left with a sore eye but was able to continue playing.
Speaking to Celtic TV, he said: "In the beginning it was a bit sore but at the end it was OK.
"But it's not nice to experience things like that. You just want to play your game and just want to enjoy the football. It was not really enjoyable that night."
The former Augsburg player had never seen a similar incident previously.
"Sometimes you see things like beer spilling all over you but not really throwing things on top of your head," he said.
"It's never nice and it's never good to happen in a football stadium. You are there to do your job and I think you guys never experienced something like it, that somebody will throw coins or something on your heads during your work.
"It's never really nice to see that happen and experience that but in the end you need to go through.
"You always need to switch on and that's why you are a football player. You always need to think about the next situation and that's what everybody is telling you.
"You need to think about the next situation and that's what I did. In the end you can always look back on it and think maybe it was not really nice or this or that. But in the end you need to perform.
"I think it was in the last 10 minutes or something and you still need to play those 10 minutes. It's on a really high level game so you still need to do it."
