Cabarrus County Students Allegedly Consume THC Edibles at School

May 09, 2024 at 02:07 pm

In a shocking incident at C.C. Griffin Middle School, two students were found in possession of THC edibles and psilocybin mushrooms with intent to distribute. While initially suspected to be an "unknown substance," it has been confirmed that the students knowingly ingested the edibles. As a result, seven students were hospitalized, and one student is facing charges for possession with intent to deliver a Schedule VI drug (THC), while the other faces charges for possession with intent to deliver a Schedule I drug (mushrooms). Additionally, the school is investigating an alleged assault on a school resource officer that occurred the same day.

Cabarrus County Students Intentionally Consumed THC Edibles at School

Concord, N.C. - Two students at C.C. Griffin Middle School in Cabarrus County, North Carolina, are facing charges for bringing and distributing marijuana edibles to the school, leading to the hospitalization of several classmates on Friday.

According to a news release from the Concord Police Department, the investigation revealed that the students who were transported to the hospital were fully aware that they had consumed THC, the psychoactive compound found in marijuana.

Paramedics responded to the school after reports of students experiencing adverse reactions, including vomiting, nausea, and dizziness. An unknown number of students were treated at the scene, and seven were subsequently transported to Atrium Health Cabarrus for further medical attention.

Parents and students suspected that the reactions were related to edible treats being shared during class. Police confirmed that students had planned to purchase and consume the Rice Krispy Treat-like edibles, distributing them to classmates.

"All of the students who ingested the edibles did so knowingly," said a police spokesperson. "We interviewed multiple students who acknowledged that they were aware they were consuming THC edibles."

In addition, some students reported ingesting psilocybin mushrooms. It is unclear how many students consumed the mushrooms or whether they were aware of their contents.

Police charged one student with two counts of possession with intent to deliver a Schedule VI drug (THC) and the other student with one count of possession with intent to deliver a Schedule I drug (mushrooms).

Alleged Assault on Campus

In a separate incident at C.C. Griffin Middle School on the same day, school administration collaborated with the police department to investigate an alleged assault on a school resource officer.

City of Concord spokesperson Lindsay Manson reported that the officer employed a Taser after a student repeatedly punched him, including strikes to the head. Manson stated that charges against the student were being filed with the Department of Juvenile Justice.

"Our primary focus is to maintain a safe learning environment and ensure the well-being of our students and staff," said Manson.

This is a developing story, and further updates will be provided as they become available.
