Blue Jays Designate Brett de Geus to Make 40-Man Space for Jeff Hoffman
Jan 11, 2025 at 11:45 pm
The Toronto Blue Jays signed reliever Jeff Hoffman to a three-year, $33 million deal on Friday.
To make room for Hoffman on the 40-man roster, the Jays designated reliever Brett de Geus for assignment, according to Ben Nicholson-Smith of Sportsnet.
de Geus, 27, appeared in 13 major league games in 2024, going 0-2 with a 7.15 ERA. He pitched just 11.1 innings and has 66.1 major league innings under his belt.
After being traded by the Miami Marlins to the Seattle Mariners in August, de Geus appeared in four games for the Mariners before being claimed off waivers by the Blue Jays in September.
Now, as a result of being designated, he'll be set to bounce around again.
Given his age, he's likely to find a minor league deal somewhere in advance of spring training, which begins about four weeks from today.
He's also pitched for the Texas Rangers and Arizona Diamondbacks in his career, making 28 appearances with Arizona in 2021.
As for the Blue Jays, getting Hoffman is a big win for them. He'll help solidify the back-end of the bullpen and will pair with Yimi Garcia to make up the eighth and ninth inning tandem (in all likelihood).
Hoffman made the All-Star Game this past year in Philadelphia and was actually drafted by Toronto in the first round of the 2014 MLB Draft. He played his college ball at East Carolina and has also pitched for the Rockies and Reds.

- The Great Resegregation
- Feb 24, 2025 at 12:35 am
- We begin today with Adam Serwer of The Atlantic writing about the “Great Resegregation” of American society. If the Great Resegregation proves successful, it will restore an America past where racial and ethnic minorities were the occasional token presence in an otherwise white-dominated landscape. It would repeal the gains of the civil-rights era in their entirety. What its advocates want is not a restoration of explicit Jim Crow segregation—that would shatter the illusion that their own achievements are based in a color-blind meritocracy. They want an arrangement that perpetuates racial inequality indefinitely while retaining some plausible deniability, a rigged system that maintains a mirage of equal opportunity while maintaining an unofficial racial hierarchy. Like elections in authoritarian countries where the autocrat is always reelected in a landslide, they want a system in which they never risk losing but can still pretend they won fairly.
