Worldcoin Foundation, the steward behind the Orb technology, has announced the open-sourcing of key components of its platform. This move, intended to cultivate trust and foster collaboration, invites the scrutiny of its Orb eye scanners by the wider development community.

"This builds upon our previous open-sourcing initiatives, including the release of our iris code late last year and the hardware specifications nearly a year ago."

Worldcoin, an independent crypto project distinct from OpenAI, aims to establish a global identification standard that verifies "personhood" and combats bot activity. Led by OpenAI co-founder and CEO Sam Altman and Alex Blania, the project was launched in January 2023 under the banner of Tools for Humanity. Subsequently, in July, Worldcoin unveiled its WLD token on the Optimism mainnet.

The Orb's functionality revolves around scanning users' irises to generate a unique "fingerprint," known as the IrisCode, which is then stored on Worldcoin's blockchain. This scan serves as the foundation for the WorldID linked to each user.

Despite its innovative approach, Worldcoin has faced scrutiny over its eye-scanning technology, which offers its WLD token in exchange for users allowing the company to scan their biometric data. Security concerns have also been raised, as highlighted by Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin in a post.
