Serbia’s Deputy Prime Minister Aleksandar Vulin has suggested that BRICS could be a better option for Serbia than the European Union. In an interview with National Defense magazine, Vulin said that he doesn’t believe Serbia has a place in the EU, at least not yet. He added that BRICS, which now includes Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, and six newly added countries, is asking for nothing and can offer more than Serbia seeks.
Vulin also highlighted that BRICS membership doesn’t require laws to be written outside of Serbia, and the bloc isn’t asking for Kosovo’s independence to be recognized or any other internal political changes. He noted that BRICS controls 51% of the world’s gas and 47% of its oil. Serbia, he said, will not impose sanctions on Russia or go to war just to join the EU, adding that Serbia values cooperation based on mutual respect, neutrality, and equality.
