The Royal Mint has announced the second installment in its “Great Engravers” coin collection, which will feature designs created by Italian engraver Benedetto Pistrucci for the Waterloo medal.

The dies for the Waterloo medal were created over a span of 30 years and feature intricate allegorical designs depicting the battle. Though the medal itself was never struck, the dies were preserved and are now housed in the Royal Mint Museum.

Using modern techniques, the Royal Mint has reproduced Pistrucci's designs on a range of coins to be issued in 2025. The obverse design was previously featured on coins in the Waterloo Medal, Allied Leaders collection, which were issued in 2024.

The reverse design of the Waterloo medal, which is being recreated on the new coins, was inspired by the Gigantomachy, a battle in Greek mythology between the Olympian gods and the giants for control of the cosmos.

Pistrucci's design depicts 19 giants, representing the 19-year conflict, tumbling around the border as they are struck by the thunder of Zeus. Two equestrian figures, likely intended to be the Duke of Wellington and General Blücher, who commanded the British and Prussian armies at the Battle of Waterloo, are guided by a figure of Victory.

The Waterloo Medal Victory coins will share a common obverse featuring the official coinage portrait of King Charles III by Martin Jennings.

Two Proof .9999 fine gold coins will be offered. A 2-ounce gold £200 coin has a 40-millimeter diameter and weighs 62.42 grams, with a maximum mintage of 221 coins priced at £6,355 each. A 5-ounce gold £500 coin has a 50-millimeter diameter and weighs 156.3 grams, with an extremely limited mintage of 40 coins each priced at £15,650.

A 5-ounce silver £10 coin and a 10-ounce silver £10 coin each measure 65 millimeters in diameter. The Proof 5-ounce silver £10 coin has a maximum mintage of 510 coins priced at £621 each, while the Proof 10-ounce silver £10 coin has a mintage of only 100 coins, each selling for £1,152.
