Proof-of-Humanity project Worldcoin (WLD) announced on Friday that it will test facial recognition technology for World App users.

According to a statement from the project, the new feature is “a special 1:1 face comparison that ensures that only the person who verifies their World ID on a globe can access the World App.” The introduction of this measure is designed to increase the security of people who use the app for tools such as online purchases, financial transactions and secure login practices.

The World App digital wallet is currently used by around 15 million people worldwide. About 6.7 million users have officially verified their “personality” using Worldcoin’s iris scanning orbs, the organization said.

Last month, Colombia's regulator accused Worldcoin of violating the personal data protection regime.

The altcoin project has always maintained that it takes personal privacy seriously. It also says that it only uses biometric data to verify that a person is human in the process of creating their World-ID. However, distributing crypto tokens in exchange for scanning people's eyeballs was enough to alarm government agencies, especially in Europe, where data privacy is a hot topic.
