Youthforia's Makeup Shade Expansion Backfires, Sparks More Controversy

Apr 27, 2024 at 07:00 am

Youthforia, a beauty brand, faced criticism for releasing a limited shade range in its cosmetics line, prompting accusations of inadequacy for diverse skin tones. Despite subsequent additions, TikToker Toni Bravo expressed dissatisfaction with the expanded offerings, citing a significant jump in shade increments and a marked difference in darkness levels, leading to a chorus of negative reactions on the platform.

Youthforia's Makeup Shade Expansion Backfires, Sparks More Controversy

Youthforia's Attempted Damage Control Raises Eyebrows

Youthforia's efforts to appease customers with an expanded makeup shade range have apparently fallen flat, sparking further controversy.

In a viral TikTok video amassing over 819,500 views, beauty enthusiast Toni Bravo (@bonitravo) voiced her concerns. She recalled last year's debacle when Youthforia faced backlash for its limited shade variety in its highly anticipated cosmetics line.

Black beauty bloggers condemned the brand for excluding darker skin tones, particularly in its "Date Night" foundation. Despite promises of inclusivity and innovation, the product initially featured a meager four medium to deep shades out of its 15-shade range.

Bravo expressed her skepticism over Youthforia's recent attempts to address the issue. She showcased the brand's "darkest shade," labeled 600, noting the significant jump from the previous shade, 570.

"That jump is kind of crazy," she remarked.

Testing the shades, Bravo found the darkest one to be "literally black," while the second darkest was a contrasting light brown. "I guess she [Youthforia] said, 'Here y'all go,'" she said sarcastically, criticizing the brand's lackluster effort.

User comments on Bravo's video echoed her dissatisfaction. "I sincerely wish nothing but failure and disgrace for Youthforia," wrote one user.

Another viewer accused the brand of "weaponized incompetence," suggesting a deliberate effort to evade genuine inclusivity.

The Daily Dot reached out to Youthforia and Toni Bravo for comment, but no responses were received at the time of publication.

This incident highlights the ongoing struggle for inclusivity in the beauty industry. Brands that fail to genuinely cater to diverse skin tones face increasing backlash and scrutiny from consumers.

Youthforia's attempt to appease customers has arguably only exacerbated the situation, raising questions about the brand's commitment to true representation and whether its actions are merely token gestures aimed at damage control.

The beauty industry must make a concerted effort to embrace and celebrate diversity, not just through superficial gestures but by actively listening to and addressing the needs of all consumers. Brands that fail to do so risk alienating their customer base and losing credibility in a market where inclusivity is increasingly becoming the norm.
