The United States will try to make history and avenge its only loss at the 2025 world junior hockey championship when it faces Finland in Sunday's gold-medal game in Ottawa (7:30 p.m. ET, NHL Network).

The defending champion Americans lost 4-3 in overtime to Finland in the third game of the preliminary round. They have been perfect since then, beating Canada, Switzerland (quarterfinals) and Czechia (semifinals) to reach the championship game. Finland has won five games in a row.

With one more win, the USA will become back-to-back champions for the first time in its history at the tournament. The Americans, who brought back 10 players and coach David Carle from last year's team, had never before reached the final in the year after winning it all.

Hockey's World Junior Championship began in 1977, but the United States was a non-factor in the annual tournament for decades, failing to reach the final until 2004.

The international hockey landscape has changed, though. Team USA will take to the ice in Ottawa on Sunday seeking its second straight World Juniors title and seventh overall as it faces Finland in the 2025 final.

Only four teams remain at the 2025 IIHF World Junior Championship, with the heavy hitters set to battle it out in the semifinals on Saturday, with the hopes of advancing to the gold medal game.

The United States is one win away from winning the IIHF World Junior Hockey championship.

Team USA will face Finland in the finals at 7:30 p.m. ET on Sunday, Jan. 5 (1/5/2025) at the Canadian Tire Centre in Ottawa.

The Americans downed Czechia 4-1 in the semifinals Saturday night, though two of those goals came in the final two minutes. U.S. captain Ryan Leonard tallied a goal and an assist to lead Team USA into the finals against Sweden, which downed longtime rival Sweden 4-3 in overtime in the semis.

Team USA beat Finland 3-2 in last year's semis before routing Sweden in the final. Can the Americans do it again to repeat as champions for the first time?
