On Wednesday, after 63 years of being sealed within the cornerstone of the former City Hall in Spartanburg, South Carolina, a time capsule containing various artifacts from 1960 was finally opened. The capsule's contents, including newspapers, coins, and city directories, provided a historical glimpse into the city's past and sparked memories among attendees. On a momentous Wednesday morning, the city of Spartanburg embarked on a captivating journey into the annals of history, unlocking a time capsule that had been sealed away for over six decades. For 63 years, the capsule had slumbered within the cornerstone of the former City Hall, a testament to the aspirations and legacy of a bygone era.

As the sun peeked through the clouds, a crowd of eager city leaders, residents, and historians gathered in the parking lot to witness the unveiling of the capsule, a tangible link to the past. With a palpable sense of anticipation, the capsule was carefully extracted and opened, revealing a treasure trove of artifacts that had been meticulously preserved over the years.

"It is a rare and extraordinary opportunity for us to have the past reach out to us from their perspective," remarked Brad Steinecke, Assistant Director of Local History at Spartanburg Libraries. "This day, we stand at the crossroads of time, connecting with the dreams and aspirations of our predecessors."

Within the time capsule's depths, over 30 precious artifacts emerged, carefully wrapped and shielded from the passage of time. A 1960 city directory, newspapers, various coins, and documents lay before the eager eyes of those present, offering a glimpse into the life and times of the city from over half a century ago.

Mayor Jerome Rice, with a touch of nostalgia, expressed, "As we move forward as a city, it is always an exceptional experience to delve into our past. Councilwoman Littlejohn was delighted to discover her mother's phone number and childhood address, while Councilman Fulmer, together with his son, pored over the documents, tracing the footsteps of his family's history."

Eager to pay homage to future generations, city officials announced their intention to create a new time capsule, which will be deposited at the newly constructed joint city-county municipal building upon its completion in 2026. "It is our duty to think of the future and leave a legacy for those who come after us," Steinecke emphasized.

Close to 100 individuals witnessed the momentous opening of the time capsule, many of them Spartanburg natives who shared their heartfelt memories of the building. Don Bramblett, a resident, reminisced, "I recall passing by this building when it was newly erected. While progress and technology bring many advancements, it is vital to appreciate our roots and the journey that has led us to where we are today."

• A detailed financial statement of the courthouse and jail
• A proclamation by then-Mayor Neville Holcomb dedicating the time capsule on April 29, 1961
• A legislative manual from Charles C. Moore, a prominent state representative and senator
• Bulletins from Converse and Wofford Colleges from 1960-61
• A Southern Bell telephone directory from 1960
• Coins from various eras, commemorating significant milestones in Spartanburg's history
• A $1 bill donated by city employee Joe Box
