Sindh lawyers hold a rally to protest the construction of six new canals on the Indus River

Lawyers in Sindh, Pakistan, staged a rally to voice their concerns over the construction of six new canals on the Indus River and the impact of corporate farming, according to a report by Dawn.

The rally, which started at the Sindh High Court (SHC) and ended at the Karachi Press Club (KPC), saw participants chanting slogans and holding placards against what they termed as "anti-Sindh projects."

Among those who joined the demonstration were Sindh High Court Bar Association President Sarfaraz Ali Metlo, Abdul Wahab Baloch, and other senior lawyers, Dawn reported further.

At the KPC, speakers highlighted the legal and environmental issues related to the project, and critics pointed out what they saw as an attempt by federal authorities to undermine the interests of Sindh.

The lawyers demanded the immediate cancellation of the canal project, stressing that it would worsen the water scarcity in Sindh and disrupt the balance of the federation.

The protest reflected the escalating tension between Sindh and federal agencies over water distribution issues.

“It is our constitutional, legal and democratic right to protest against the imposed construction of canals on the Indus River and cooperate farming in Sindh. The state has been persistently pursuing a agenda to usurp Sindh's land, resources and river.”

“The Indus River is the lifeline of Sindh's existence. It is the responsibility of every Sindhi to stand united in defending its preservation. We will engage in peaceful protests until the voice of truth reaches the echelons of power.”

Recently, the World Sindhi Congress staged a protest outside the Pakistan High Commission in London on the occasion of International River Day to condemn the federal and Punjab governments for constructing six illegal canals on the Indus River.

Jeay Sindh Freedom Movement (JSFM) Chairman Sohail Abro also highlighted the urgency of the issue, saying that it was a matter of life and death for the people of Sindh.

In a Facebook post, Sohail Abro expressed his deep concern over the pressing issue of the six canals being constructed on the Indus River by the Punjab government with the aim to steal Sindh's water.

He stated, "This is a life-and-death issue for the people of Sindh. The Siphons of Sindh's share of the Indus River are being closed, and despite the Supreme Court's orders, no action is being taken to open them."

Sohail Abro further noted that the World Sindhi Congress in London is planning to stage a protest against this injustice on March 22. He appealed to all Sindhis living in Britain to participate in this demonstration in large numbers.

This protest will serve to bring the attention of the international community to the urgent matter of Sindh's water rights.

Announcing the protest, the World Sindhi Congress stated, "Join us as we raise our voices against this blatant disregard for environmental sustainability and local communities."

"Despite the pressing need for sustainable agricultural practices to mitigate the climate crisis, the Pakistani government is indifferent to the impending ecological disaster in Sindh. They are intent on draining the Indus River, which will have devastating consequences for the province's ecosystem and the livelihoods of its people."

The statement added, "The World Sindhi Congress is mobilizing to protest against this urgent issue. We invite all those who are concerned about environmental protection and social justice to join us in this critical endeavor."

This protest will take place on March 22 at 12:00 PM in London, in front of the Pakistan High Commission, located at 12, Queen's Gate, London SW7 4PJ.

The World Sindhi Congress is urging all British Sindhis to participate in this protest in large numbers to amplify their voice against this pressing matter.

Those interested in joining the protest are requested to contact +44 7908 668168 or email info@sindhi.world for further details.

The vibrant hues of Sindh's culture will be on display at the Karachi Press Club as a rally culminates in a celebration of music, dance, and poetry.

This carnivalesque affair will serve to amplify the voices of those who spoke out earlier today against the construction of six new canals on the Indus River and the impact of corporate farming.
