SC Villa: A Legacy of Triumph and the Quest to Regain Past Glory

SC Villa, the iconic Ugandan football club, holds an unparalleled record in the nation's footballing history. With 16 league titles, 9 Uganda Cups, and 3 Cecafa Kagame Cups to their name, the "Blues" or "Jogoos" have etched their name among the hallowed ranks of Ugandan footballing royalty.

However, the club's recent fortunes have been a stark contrast to their golden era. In the 2018/19 season, SC Villa faced the ignominy of relegation, a stark reminder of their decline. As the club grapples with the challenges of the modern footballing landscape, the onus now lies on the current crop of players and management to restore the club to its former glory.

In recent years, SC Villa has embarked on a comprehensive restructuring plan, starting with the establishment of a Board of Trustees. The board includes renowned football administrators such as Ahmed Omar Mandela, Franco Mugabe, William Nkemba, McDusmas Kabega, and former finance minister Gerald Ssendaula.

As the club sets its sights on reclaiming its status as a Ugandan football powerhouse, it is worth revisiting the heroes of Villa's last league triumph in 2004. These players epitomized the spirit of the "Jogoos" and their unwavering commitment to excellence.

Denis Onyango

Then only a third-choice goalkeeper, Denis Onyango has since become a Ugandan Cranes legend and a stalwart between the posts for South Africa's Mamelodi Sundowns. His talent and determination were evident even in his early days at SC Villa, as demonstrated by his hat-trick performance in a match against Ruhinda.

Hannington Kalyesubula

As the understudy to the dependable Posnet Omwony, Hannington Kalyesubula proved to be a capable deputy. After retiring from football, Kalyesubula has gone on to establish himself as a respected goalkeeping coach, working with Busoga United and BUL FC.

Posnet Omwony

Posnet Omwony was the undisputed first choice goalkeeper for both SC Villa and the Ugandan national team. He later moved to South Africa, where he turned out for Bloemfontein Celtics. Omwony currently resides in South Africa and serves as a goalkeeper coach at Mpumalanga Black Aces.

Andrew Mwesigwa

A budding center-back at the time, Andrew Mwesigwa later went on to captain the Jogoos. After a successful career in Kazakhstan, Iceland, and China, he has returned to Uganda and established a high school and football academy.

Timothy Batabaire

An indefatigable center-back, Timothy Batabaire was a rock at the heart of the SC Villa defense. After leaving Villa, he had a brilliant career in South Africa, playing for Bidvest Wits and Bloemfontein Celtic among others. Batabaire is now based in South Africa, where he works as a pundit for SuperSport.

Robert Tumusiime

Nicknamed "Kolobola" for his aggressive tackling, Robert Tumusiime formed a formidable partnership with Batabaire. Their resolute defense was instrumental in Villa conceding only 12 goals in 29 games during their championship season.

Godfrey Kateregga

A versatile fullback, Godfrey Kateregga could play effectively on either flank of the Villa defense. He was particularly adept as a right-back, providing both attacking and defensive contributions.

Simeon Masaba

Simeon Masaba displaced Kateregga at right-back and went on to make the position his own, not only for Villa but also for the Uganda Cranes. He has since transitioned into coaching and has recently served as coach at Onduparaka and assistant coach at BUL.

Peter Makanga

Peter Makanga filled the void left by Nestroy Kizito at left-back in the 2004 season. He played with determination and provided a solid base from which Villa could launch attacks.

Phillip Obwiny

Arguably the most versatile footballer Uganda has produced, Phillip Obwiny could play effectively in numerous positions. His adaptability and skill were invaluable assets to the Jogoos.

Edgar Watson

One of the most successful club captains in Ugandan football, Edgar Watson led his team to the league title in 2004. He is currently the Chief Executive Officer
