Residents of North and South Carolina Coasts Brace for Cold Snap

Feb 22, 2025 at 03:02 am

Residents based out of the coasts of North and South Carolina are expecting a cold snap. This came into light when the National Weather Service (NWS) issued a Cold Weather Advisory effective until 10:00 AM EST this morning.

Residents of North and South Carolina Coasts Brace for Cold Snap

Residents along the coasts of North and South Carolina are bracing for a cold snap, according to a Cold Weather Advisory issued by the National Weather Service (NWS) and remaining in effect until 10:00 AM EST this morning. Frigid conditions could pose risks to health and daily routines, the advisory warned.

What to Expect

The NWS cautions that wind chills could plunge to as low as 12 degrees Fahrenheit in some areas. Such temperatures can lead to frostbite on exposed skin in as little as 30 minutes. Coastal regions, including Wilmington, NC, and Charleston, SC, are among those under the advisory.

Possible Effects

Residents of Wilmington, NC, have been enduring temperatures hovering around 25°F (-4°C) with an added wind chill factor. Other cities like Charleston, SC, have been experiencing 33°F (0°C) with brisk winds to boot.

School buses and local businesses have closed as a precautionary measure. Shelters will remain open for those seeking warmth, and local organizations are reaching out to provide assistance for the vulnerable.

Further Predictions

According to meteorologists, temperatures should go up into the 40s and low 50s. But the ongoing cold spell is a reminder of how variable winter weather can be in our area.

Residents are advised to follow local news and adhere to all alerts from the National Weather Service.
