Ray Chan, an esteemed production designer known for his exceptional contributions to iconic Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) films, has passed away at the age of 51.
Chan embarked on his Marvel journey as a supervising art director on "Thor: The Dark World," which starred Chris Hemsworth and Natalie Portman. He subsequently reprised this role in "Guardians of the Galaxy," "Avengers: Age of Ultron," "Doctor Strange," "Avengers: Infinity War," and "Avengers: Endgame."
His artistry extended to "Spider-Man: Far From Home" featuring Tom Holland and Zendaya, where he served as art director. Chan's exceptional talent then propelled him to the role of production designer on "Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania" with Paul Rudd and the highly anticipated "Deadpool & Wolverine" film.
News of Chan's passing sent shockwaves through the Marvel community and beyond. Ryan Reynolds, who stars as the titular anti-hero Deadpool alongside Hugh Jackman's Wolverine in the upcoming film, expressed his profound sorrow.
"Words are utterly inadequate to describe this loss," Reynolds lamented on his Instagram story. "An unparalleled reservoir of skill, tender grit, and talent is no longer with us. He was an invaluable creative force on 'Deadpool & Wolverine,' on par with the writers, director, and stars."
Reynolds, who shared a close bond with Chan, vividly recalled their final conversation "exactly two weeks ago." "One of the last things I said to him was that he creates magic, and there's no one like him on earth. We would often playfully banter with each other," Reynolds reminisced.
"Yet, of all the last things you could say to someone you cherish, that's a tiny bit of solace I'll cling to eternally."
Marvel Studios officially announced Chan's passing on Friday. In a heartfelt statement, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige and Executive Producer Louis D'Esposito paid tribute to their fallen colleague.
"Ray was, above all, a dear friend to everyone at Marvel Studios," Feige and D'Esposito said. "He was a brilliant collaborator who infused every frame of every film he touched with creativity and meticulous attention to detail. He had an uncanny ability to inspire the best from every department he worked with."
"Ray possessed a gentle spirit and was an absolute joy to collaborate with," they continued. "His generosity extended far beyond his work, and he had a remarkable gift for nurturing ideas into something truly extraordinary. We are heartbroken by his untimely passing. He will be deeply missed by everyone at Marvel, and our deepest condolences go out to his family and loved ones."
Chan is survived by his wife, Lindsay, and their two sons, Caspar and Sebastian. The cause of his passing has not been publicly disclosed.
