As Princess Leonor of Spain embarks on her training journey aboard the Juan Sebastián Elcano, she is also the subject of a new commemorative coin

Princess Leonor of Spain Is the Face of a New 40-Euro Collectible Coin

Princess Leonor of Spain, currently fulfilling her duties as a midshipman on the training ship Juan Sebastián Elcano, is set to appear on a new collectible coin that will be minted by the Fábrica Nacional de Moneda y Timbre, Spain's national mint.

The coin, valued at 40 euros, will be released in the second quarter of 2025 and will feature a portrait of Princess Leonor on the obverse, while the reverse will display the Spanish State mintmark, the letter "C" for the mint at Madrid, the year of coinage "2025", and the coin's standard weight and metal content. It will also feature the princess's coat of arms, the Cross of Victory, a royal crown, and the inscription "PRINCESA DE ASTURIAS - 18 AÑOS DE EDAD".

The coin, which will be made of 925 silver combined with copper, will weigh 18 grams and have a diameter of 33 millimeters with a smooth edge, is designed not for everyday transactions but as a collectible piece.

According to the official order published in the Boletín Oficial del Estado (BOE), the coin will be a testament to Princess Leonor's pivotal role in the Spanish monarchy. The portrait of the princess, influenced by her mother, Queen Letizia, who attended multiple meetings with officials from the mint to review sketches, will be a key highlight of the coin's design.

"The person who has chosen exactly how this portrait of the princess will look is her mother, Queen Letizia," journalist Alejandro Entrambasaguas revealed.

Queen Letizia expressed a desire for the coin to represent a moment that symbolizes the leadership path that Princess Leonor is currently embarking upon.

The collectible coin is set to be released in late May 2025, although the precise date has yet to be confirmed by the Spanish royal family.

However, recent reports indicate that the royal family is currently involved in a legal case in Chile following the unauthorized capture and dissemination of private images of Princess Leonor during a private visit to a shopping center in the country.

According to the Regional Prosecutor's Office of Magallanes and Chilean Antarctica, an investigation was opened on March 21, 2025. The shopping center, which preferred not to disclose its name, responded by stating that the visit was entirely private and that the princess's presence was not announced or publicized by them.

"The visit of the royal personage, daughter of the king and queen of Spain, was carried out without any disturbances and was conducted in a secure manner," they added.

The shopping center further mentioned that Princess Leonor's identity was revealed by the same social media users who later shared the images, and that they immediately requested the removal of the photographs and videos from their social media channels as soon as they became aware of their dissemination.

This incident highlights the ongoing challenges faced by public figures regarding privacy, especially for younger royals who are navigating their roles in the public eye. Princess Leonor, the future heir to the Spanish throne, is known for her low-key presence on social media, making this situation even more sensitive.

As Princess Leonor continues her training on the Juan Sebastián Elcano and becomes a subject of both admiration and scrutiny, the release of the new collectible coin serves as a milestone in her royal narrative. It encapsulates the blend of tradition and modernity that defines her role within the Spanish monarchy.
