Polygon zkEVM Mainnet Beta Hit by Sequencer Glitch
Mar 25, 2024 at 05:02 am
Polygon's zkEVM mainnet beta encountered a sequencer issue, affecting only the zkEVM rollup while leaving PoS, CDK, and deployed chains operational. The Polygon team is actively working on a resolution and will provide a post-mortem analysis. Despite this setback, Polygon remains committed to zkEVM innovation, with anticipation for the upcoming second-generation release.
Polygon zkEVM Mainnet Beta Encounters Sequencer Issue
March 23, 2024
Polygon, a leading blockchain platform, has encountered a setback with the beta version of its zkEVM mainnet. The issue stems from a sequencer malfunction caused by a layer-one reorganization.
"Polygon zkEVM Mainnet Beta faced an issue with its sequencer due to an L1 reorg. We are working on fully resolving the issue and will follow up with a detailed post-mortem," Polygon tweeted.
Impact and Resolution
The issue affects only Polygon zkEVM, a rollup that leverages zero-knowledge proofs to enhance Ethereum's scalability. Other components of the Polygon ecosystem, including its Proof-of-Stake (PoS) network and chains built using the Polygon software development kit (CDK), remain unaffected.
The Polygon team is actively working to resolve the issue and will provide a comprehensive post-mortem analysis to identify the root causes and implement preventive measures.
Market Impact
Despite the setback, the incident has had no significant impact on MATIC, the native token of the Polygon ecosystem. MATIC has gained 0.34% in the past 24 hours, trading at $0.9804. However, it has declined by 5% over the past week, reflecting the broader market downturn.
Background on Polygon zkEVM
Polygon zkEVM is a layer-two protocol designed to improve Ethereum's scalability. It uses off-chain transaction processing and zero-knowledge proofs to reduce network congestion and transaction fees.
In September 2023, blockchain security firm Verichains identified a critical flaw in Polygon zkEVM's zkProver module, which could have allowed for proof forgery attacks. Polygon and Verichains subsequently collaborated to resolve the issue.
Outlook
Despite this temporary setback, Polygon remains committed to innovation and is eagerly anticipating the launch of the second-generation zkEVM, which promises further performance enhancements. The company is confident in its ability to address the current issue and maintain the stability and security of its platform.
