50p coin featuring King Charles III sells for 224 times its face value on eBay

A lucky eBay seller has managed to sell a 50p coin for an incredible 224 times its original value after sparking a bidding war.

The coin was only minted in 2023, making it one of the first to feature King Charles III. It also has a bold design, with an image of the Atlantic salmon on its tails side.

It is currently the rarest 50p coin in circulation, with just 200,000 of them minted - meaning it is even rarer than the 2009 Kew Gardens 50p.

One lucky seller was in for an exciting payday this week after listing theirs online.

Described as "2023 Atlantic Salmon 50p Coin - No Privy Mark - Very Rare", the item had an initial price of 99p.

But after an 18-way bidding war, this jumped up and up, with a final sale price of £112 - plus £3.49 for Standard Tracked Delivery.

When the coins were released into circulation in 2023, Rebecca Morgan, director of commemorative coin at The Royal Mint, said: “The releasing of mintage figures is an eagerly anticipated event among the coin collecting community.

"This year is particularly exciting as we reveal the Atlantic Salmon as the rarest 50p in circulation.

"For the first time in 15 years, the highly collectable Kew Gardens 50p loses its top spot as the rarest in circulation with the Atlantic Salmon 50p splashing its way to number one.

“2023 marks pivotal changes for the nation’s coinage, including the introduction of coins celebrating King Charles III’s coronation entering circulation.

"Finding these special designs, like the Atlantic Salmon, in your change is a win for all collectors.”
