NYIAS Rescheduled to August Amidst Auto Industry Calendar Adjustments

Apr 01, 2024 at 07:00 pm

Due to the ongoing pandemic, the 2021 New York International Auto Show has been postponed from April to August, joining a series of reschedulings in the American auto show circuit. The show will now take place alongside the Javits Center's expansion, aiming to offer additional exhibit space. Despite these changes, the Chicago Auto Show remains the season opener, followed by Los Angeles, New York, and Detroit, which has permanently shifted to a fall slot.

2021 New York International Auto Show Rescheduled to August

New York, NY - Amidst ongoing adjustments to the automotive industry calendar due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the organizers of the New York International Auto Show (NYIAS) have announced a substantial shift in the event's dates. Originally scheduled for April, the 2021 NYIAS will now be held from August 20th to 29th.

This move follows a series of changes and uncertainties surrounding American auto shows in 2020 and 2021. The Chicago Auto Show, initially slated for February, faces potential postponement to March, pending finalization of plans. New York's shift to August creates additional breathing room for the Chicago event, which will remain the season opener.

The revised 2020-2021 auto show schedule now stands as follows:

  • Chicago Auto Show: TBD
  • Los Angeles Auto Show: May 21 onwards
  • New York Auto Show: August 20th-29th
  • Detroit Auto Show: September 28th-October 9th

"In light of the multifaceted challenges we are navigating, we have concluded that rescheduling the 2021 NYIAS to August is not only prudent but also presents a unique opportunity to maximize our presence in the expanded Javits Center," stated Mark Schienberg, President of the NYIAS, upon announcing the change.

The Javits Center, the venue for the NYIAS, has undergone major renovations and expansions, resulting in an additional 100,000 square feet of exhibit space on the main floor. The August date will allow the organization to fully utilize these enhancements and showcase a wider array of vehicles and technologies.

Among the changes to the 2021 schedule, only the move of the Detroit Auto Show to the fall slot appears to be permanent. The North American International Auto Show (NAIAS), which was scheduled to take place in June this year for the first time, had previously shifted from its traditional January slot. It now seems unlikely that the Detroit show will ever return to a springtime schedule.

The 2021 NYIAS will serve as a key platform for automakers to unveil their latest models, showcase technological advancements, and engage with consumers. As the industry grapples with the challenges of the pandemic, the rescheduling of major events like the NYIAS underscores the need for adaptability and resilience within the automotive sector.
