Lyon's Defensive Woes Continue as PSG Rips Apart Exposed Fractures in Formation

Apr 23, 2024 at 02:45 pm

After conceding eight goals in their last two matches, including four against Paris Saint-Germain, Lyon are desperate to regain defensive stability as they prepare to face Monaco. The team's recent struggles have highlighted the need for a more balanced approach, with concerns raised about the effectiveness of their current 4-2-3-1 formation.

Lyon's Defensive Woes Continue as PSG Exploits Exposed Fractures in System

Olympique Lyonnais have conceded a staggering seven goals in their last two matches, with their 4-0 defeat to Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) on Sunday night highlighting fundamental defensive flaws that threaten to derail their late-season push for success.

Against PSG, Lyon's attempt to press high in a 4-2-3-1 formation proved disastrous, leaving gaping holes in their defensive structure. Despite the presence of a double pivot, Maxence Caqueret ventured far from his defensive zone in search of high recoveries, creating a domino effect that exposed their frail backline.

The result was a series of PSG attacks that swept through Lyon's defense unimpeded, with the Parisian attackers exploiting the vast spaces created by the Lyon players' disjointed pressing. The strategy of pushing up on PSG could have worked had it been organized, but instead, it became a disjointed effort that played into the hands of their opponents.

"Our line of four in front was quickly erased, and Matic and Caqueret pressed 60 meters from our goal," observed Nicolas Puydebois, a Lyon consultant. "Once they were bypassed, there was a boulevard behind them. There was a lack of impact in the duels and a lack of repeated runs in the first half."

The choice of system itself has come under scrutiny, with Pierre Sage's decision to switch from the more defensively solid 4-1-4-1 formation that had served Lyon well in recent matches. The inverted triangle midfield with Rayan Cherki at the apex left Lyon unbalanced, as they lacked a true ball-winner in the center of the park.

While Cherki is an undeniable talent, his lack of defensive work rate is a liability in such a high-stakes match. Without him, Lyon lack creativity, but with him, they sacrifice balance and solidity. The result against PSG was a perfect example, with Bradley Barcola tormenting Ainsley Maitland-Niles on the flank due to the gaps left open by Lyon's attacking midfielders.

"We missed a sentinel who protects the defense and compensates for certain mismatches suffered by our two midfielders in a 4-3-3," said Puydebois. "That's Matic's role usually, but it wasn't possible in this match."

Conceding two goals in the opening six minutes against PSG is a daunting task for any team, and Lyon's inability to weather the storm is a testament to their defensive frailties. The constant flow of goals conceded is not solely a systemic issue, as Lyon have shown a propensity for conceding under both defensive and attacking formations.

With 48 goals conceded this season, Lyon have one of the worst defenses in Ligue 1. While they have rediscovered their attacking verve under Sage, they have failed to address their defensive deficiencies, conceding an average of 1.5 goals per game since late November.

Against PSG, it was a collective failure, with Puydebois noting a lack of effort, intensity, and determination. "We can see that this Lyon team needs these ingredients to believe in their chances," he said. "When they don't put them in, it's immediately more complicated."

As they prepare for Sunday's clash with Monaco, Lyon must rediscover the foundations that have served them well in recent weeks. The tactical nuances of a three-man midfield can provide greater balance, but the real battle will be won or lost in the minds of the players.

First and foremost, Lyon must tighten their defense to avoid chasing the scoreline. While the primary objective of football is to score more goals than the opponent, it is undoubtedly easier to win when the team keeps a clean sheet. For Lyon, that has been an elusive goal this season, and they desperately need to find a way to turn the tide before their late-season aspirations evaporate.
