Lucknow Municipal Corporation Plans Token System and Enhanced Facilities for Comfortable Voting Amidst Heatwave

Apr 05, 2024 at 11:50 am

In preparation for the anticipated heatwave during the Lucknow by-election on May 20, the Lucknow Municipal Corporation (LMC) proposes to implement a token system at polling stations to mitigate long queues. The initiative, similar to one used in Jharkhand's 2019 Lok Sabha election, involves issuing tokens to voters, allowing them to wait in designated shaded seating areas with drinking water facilities until their turn to cast their vote.

Lucknow Municipal Corporation Proposes Token System and Enhanced Facilities for Smooth Voting Amidst Heatwave

In anticipation of the intense heatwave forecast during the upcoming parliamentary elections scheduled for May 20th in Lucknow, the Lucknow Municipal Corporation (LMC) is proposing a novel token system to streamline the voting process and mitigate the discomfort faced by voters standing in long queues.

The proposed token system, if approved by the Election Commission, will provide voters with tokens upon arrival at polling stations. Voters will then be directed to designated seating areas with ample shade and parking facilities, where they can comfortably await their turn to cast their ballots.

This initiative draws inspiration from a similar token system successfully implemented by the Election Commission of India (ECI) in Jharkhand during the 2019 Lok Sabha polls, aiming to enhance voter convenience, particularly for the elderly.

"In light of the anticipated scorching heat on election day, our primary objective is to make the voting process as comfortable as possible for our citizens," asserted Municipal Commissioner Inderjit Singh. "We will distribute tokens, establish seating arrangements, and ensure that voters do not have to endure prolonged exposure to the sun while waiting in queues. Additionally, we will enhance facilities such as seating, sunshades, wheelchairs, and nearby parking."

Commissioner Singh highlighted the challenges commonly faced by voters at polling stations, including inadequate access to drinking water, toilets, seating, shade, and wheelchairs. These challenges, coupled with long wait times, difficulty locating names on voter lists, and lack of comfortable waiting areas, often discourage voters from participating in the electoral process. Moreover, insufficient car parking facilities near polling stations further contribute to voter dissatisfaction.

"The LMC is fully committed to supporting the state poll authorities to ensure that no such issues arise during the upcoming election," stated Singh. "We will deploy volunteers to assist voters and facilitate a smooth and accessible voting experience."

In line with the ECI's directives, the LMC will leverage social media, establish voter education clubs, and organize meetings with various social groups to promote voter awareness and encourage participation. The corporation aims to make voting accessible for young people, women, and individuals with disabilities by collaborating closely with all stakeholders and conducting multiple campaigns leading up to the election.

The LMC will collaborate with Residents Welfare Associations, government departments, malls, and parks to disseminate election-related information. Strategically placed signage in public places and on LMC vehicles involved in drinking water supply and garbage collection will serve as reminders for citizens to exercise their right to vote.

"We are confident that our multifaceted approach, including the token system, enhanced facilities, and voter education campaigns, will significantly improve the voting experience for the citizens of Lucknow," concluded Singh. "We urge all eligible voters to participate enthusiastically in the upcoming election and shape the future of our city."
