Gregory-Portland's season ends in first round of playoffs

The Gregory-Portland Wildcats' up-and-down season ended in heartbreak in the first round of the playoffs on Friday night.

Despite taking two-score leads in the first quarter, the Wildcats couldn't hold on, eventually falling 31-28 on Nov. 15 to the Victoria West Warriors in a Class 5A Division II bi-district matchup at Ray Akins Wildcat Stadium in Portland.

The Wildcats bolted to leads of 14-0 in the first quarter and 21-7 in the second before the Warriors clawed back to tie the score at 21-21 heading into halftime.

Quarterback Reed Dooms wound up throwing for 211 yards and two touchdowns in the game for Gregory-Portland. He also added 91 yards and two touchdowns on the ground, accounting for all four Wildcat touchdowns on the night.

Wide receiver Brandon Coates was one of Dooms' favorite targets on the night, winding up with four catches for 61 yards and hauling in both touchdown passes. Carter Dominguez also had a strong night in the loss, catching four passes for a team-leading 103 yards receiving in the game.

Running back Cody Adame finished with 153 yards rushing on the night to pace the Wildcats' rushing attack.

On the defensive side, Quinn Supnet and Ryder Harrison led the way with eight tackles apiece for the Wildcats' defense. Aiden Moreno also had five tackles including a tackle for loss to go along with an interception, and Brent Nuss also nabbed a fourth quarter interception.

The Wildcats ended the 2024 campaign with a 5-6 overall record and making the playoffs for a fifth consecutive season.
