Climbing Lab's Annual Bouldering Competition Draws Record Crowds, Showcases Thrilling Displays of Athleticism

Leeds, West Yorkshire - The Climbing Lab, a renowned indoor climbing facility, hosted its highly anticipated annual one-day bouldering competition, The Lab Test, on April 6, 2023. Drawing an impressive turnout of 250 climbers and 80 spectators, the event celebrated the vibrant climbing community and showcased exceptional athleticism.

Inclusive Categories Foster Camaraderie and Competition

The Lab Test featured eight inclusive categories, ensuring participation from climbers of all levels and backgrounds. Local regulars, rising stars from youth teams, and seasoned professionals, including GB athletes and world cup finalists, came together to push their limits on the challenging boulder problems.

Custom-Designed Boulders Provide Unique Challenges

The competition area was transformed with 25 custom-designed qualifier boulders, each boasting its own distinct style and aesthetic. Climbers navigated overhangs, cracks, and technical sequences to earn points. A team of expert setters, including EP setter Luke Murphy, collaborated to enhance the challenges with specialized holds.

Community Support and Sponsorships Enhance the Event

Sponsors from the local community played a vital role in the success of The Lab Test. Climbers enjoyed complimentary competition T-shirts printed by a local artist, food and beverages from Meanwood Pizza and Salma Taco's, refreshments from North Brewery, and freshly roasted coffee from Maude. Climbers Against Cancer, Core Climbing, Gecko Grip, and Tenzing also participated, offering free samples, merchandise, and energy drinks.

Qualifier Results Set the Stage for Intense Finals

After an exhilarating day of qualifiers, the top six scores in each category advanced to the finals. The women's qualifiers were dominated by the reigning champion, Katherine MacDougall, while Aiden Dunne emerged as the top qualifier in the men's category.

Spectacular Finals Showcase Elite Skills

The finals took place on the Paris 2024 Olympics-standard EP Titan boulder, hosted by George Newham, the Lab's resident coach and local grit master. The finalists displayed remarkable strength, technique, and determination, leaving the audience in awe.
