Clermont Crushed in Agonizing Challenge Cup Semifinal Loss to Sharks

May 04, 2024 at 11:21 pm

Despite dominating most of the match, Clermont succumbed to defeat in the Challenge Cup semi-finals on Saturday, May 4, at Twickenham's Stoop Stadium, sensationally overturned by the South African Sharks 32-31. Christophe Urios's men, who led by 13 points at one stage, controlled the match for long periods against the Sharks, who fielded seven World Champion Springboks at kick-off.

Clermont agonisingly succumbs to Sharks in Challenge Cup semi-final thriller

London, May 4 (AFP) - Clermont's valiant effort was ultimately undone as they fell to a heartbreaking 32-31 defeat against South African giants the Sharks in the Challenge Cup semi-final at the Stoop in Twickenham on Saturday.

Despite leading by as many as 13 points, Christophe Urios' men were unable to withstand the Sharks' relentless pressure, a team boasting seven World Cup-winning Springboks in their starting lineup.

Clermont enjoyed a dream start, scoring three tries in the first half through Joris Jurand (5th, 20th minutes) and Alex Newsome (30th minute). However, their ill-discipline proved costly, conceding eight penalties in the first half alone, allowing Eben Etzebeth's side to remain within striking distance.

As the second half progressed, the Sharks' dominance began to tell. They crashed over through Koch (61st minute) before winger Makazole Mapimpi found the corner for a crucial score (70th minute).

Clermont's misery was compounded when Aphelele Fassi was shown a yellow card for a deliberate block on an unsuspecting Jurand in the 64th minute. Despite the numerical advantage, Clermont failed to capitalise, conceding the decisive try moments later.

Fly-half Siya Masuku, impeccable from the tee (22 points, 100% success rate), slotted the conversion to give the South Africans a slender lead.

The Sharks will now contest their first-ever Challenge Cup final on May 24 in Tottenham against either Gloucester or Treviso, who face off later in the day.

For Clermont, currently languishing in 10th place in the Top 14, the defeat ends their European adventure with only a potential top-six finish in the domestic league remaining to salvage their season.

Despite their valiant effort, Clermont ultimately paid the price for their indiscipline and inability to adapt to the Sharks' physicality. The South Africans' victory is a testament to their growing stature in European rugby, as they continue to challenge the traditional powerhouses of the continent.
